System Technical Expert Lead

Emerson•Clayton, MO

About The Position

The System Technical Expert Lead serves as the enterprise technical authority for Emerson’s centralized Transportation Management System (TMS), supporting its global logistics network and Business Units. The role combines hands-on system ownership, configuration, troubleshooting, and analytics to improve the speed, reliability, visibility, and cost-effectiveness of global freight movement. Working with IT, Strategic Sourcing, Business Units, and Global Logistics Operations, the Lead translates business requirements into scalable system capabilities and leads through influence without formal direct reports. The position configures and supports TMS operations across ocean, air, truck, and parcel modes; manages the order-to-shipment lifecycle; maintains carrier and rate structures; and resolves functional issues. It also optimizes planning and shipment-building processes, leads cross-functional logistics initiatives, standardizes system conventions, and evaluates third-party tools and integration opportunities. The Lead develops logistics dashboards and decision-support tools, builds automated data pipelines and curated datasets, and manages release and upgrade readiness. The position provides technical guidance and training, applies continuous improvement methods, maintains solution documentation and issue tracking, communicates progress through governance forums and leadership updates, and anticipates future logistics technology requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field.
  • Experience in logistics, supply chain, transportation systems, analytics, or related disciplines supporting complex operational environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of Transportation Management Systems.
  • Advanced analytics and data visualization experience using platforms such as Power BI, SQL-based tools, or Oracle analytics environments.
  • Proficiency in Python for data processing, automation, and analytical workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex cross-functional programs across global teams and time zones.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA or master’s degree.
  • Five or more years of experience in logistics, supply chain systems, or analytics-focused roles, including hands-on TMS configuration and support.
  • Hands-on enterprise TMS experience, particularly Oracle Transportation Management (OTM), including configuring rating, carrier management, itineraries, routing, agents, shipment planning, and planning parameters, and participating in an upgrade or major release.
  • Experience with system analysis and TMS data flows, including order, item, and cost data, in a multi-system environment.
  • Deep SQL expertise for querying, analyzing, and troubleshooting enterprise databases, data models, and large transactional datasets.
  • Experience tuning optimization and planning constraints with measured improvements in cost, service, or utilization.
  • Experience with EDI, APIs, REST or SOAP web services, XML, and middleware connecting a TMS to multiple enterprise systems.
  • Advanced Python-based automation and experience orchestrating ETL and integration workflows using modern scheduling or automation frameworks for data-intensive logistics workflows and tooling.
  • Direct experience deploying enterprise-scale logistics initiatives, such as consolidation programs, mode optimization, and international network expansions.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex system issues independently with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Configure locations, ship units, equipment, routing itineraries, and consolidation, pooling, and cross-dock logic across ocean, air, truck, and parcel modes.
  • Manage the order-to-shipment lifecycle, including order release, shipment build, tendering, tracking, and delivery status; monitor execution and resolve exceptions before they affect customer delivery.
  • Serve as the functional escalation point for TMS planning, execution, and visibility issues; trace root causes through transactional data and implement lasting solutions with IT and operations.
  • Build and maintain carrier and rate structures, including rate offerings, rate records, rate geography, and accessorials.
  • Translate business policies into agents, saved queries, parameter sets, and status logic.
  • Own data object and database design, govern master data standards, and document functional specifications, user stories, business rules, and validation criteria.
  • Configure and tune planning parameters, constraints, bulk planning, shipment build logic, and cost-versus-service weighting; validate improvements using what-if scenarios and actual shipment data.
  • Lead cross-functional logistics initiatives, including network consolidations, new lanes, and regional expansions, through configuration, testing, and operational readiness.
  • Standardize Business Unit naming, units of measure, calendars, and other system conventions.
  • Evaluate third-party tools and API/AI automation solutions through gap analyses and integration feasibility reviews.
  • Develop and maintain enterprise logistics dashboards and decision-support tools, including the Mode Comparison Tool (MCT), for strategic programs and daily operations.
  • Build and sustain automated data pipelines, ETL processes, and curated datasets using SQL and Python to improve visibility, risk assessment, and operational automation.
  • Lead release and upgrade readiness, including configuration governance, regression testing, cutover planning, and post-release validation.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to TMS Pro Users, analysts, and business stakeholders.
  • Apply continuous improvement methods to automate manual work and reduce operational errors.
  • Maintain solution documentation and issue tracking; communicate progress and outcomes through governance forums and leadership updates; anticipate future logistics technology requirements.
