Intern - System Protection Technician (Herndon/Loudoun, VA)
About The Position
Dominion Energy is seeking multiple System Protection Technician Interns for Summer 2027 at our district offices in Herndon and Loudoun, VA. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field of electric transmission and distribution. Interns will work closely with System Protection Technicians to develop a foundational understanding of substation electrical equipment, high-voltage diagnostic testing, protective relays, and control circuit troubleshooting. This role is ideal for students interested in fieldwork and technical operations, with the potential for full-time employment upon successful completion of the internship and alignment with Dominion Energy’s culture and career pathways.
Requirements
- Strong problem-solving skills with mechanical and/or electrical equipment and control circuits.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
- Solid math, technical, and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Must be enrolled at a 2-year or 4-year school pursuing a Bachelors or Associate's Technology degree in the preferred areas of: Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Electronics Technology, Instrumentation Technology, Mechatronic Technology. Other comparable disciplines may be substituted.
- Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
- Must have an anticipated graduation date of Winter 2027 or later.
Responsibilities
- Review and interpret electrical design drawings.
- Assist with infrared scans and basic instrument checkout and repair.
- Participate in high-voltage diagnostic testing and relay testing.
- Support functional testing of protection systems and control circuits.
- Shadow System Protection Technicians to gain insight into substation equipment and field operations.
