System Product Test Engineer

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$102,100 - $219,200

About The Position

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) supports Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure and online businesses. Within SCHIE, the Compute Silicon & Manufacturing Engineering organization designs, develops, manufactures, and packages computer chips, including Azure Cobalt. The Silicon Manufacturing and Package Engineering team helps define and deliver operational measures for hardware manufacturing, with a focus on quality, delivery, scale, planning, and sustainability. The System Product Test Engineer develops and supports system-level test (SLT) and platform strategies, requirements, tools, and methodologies across hardware and software. The role works with internal and partner teams to integrate hardware, firmware, content, and automation solutions; characterizes and correlates power and performance from systems to automated test equipment (ATE); and uses test data to improve outgoing quality and product performance. The engineer also contributes to SLT automation infrastructure, manages activities across product groups, and triages and debugs system-level failures across silicon, hardware, and software.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and at least 1 year of technical engineering experience; or bachelor's degree in one of these fields and at least 2 years of technical engineering experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Ability to satisfy export-control eligibility requirements for access to controlled information; the successful candidate must provide citizenship or qualifying residency/protected-status documentation, with citizenship verified using a valid passport where applicable.
  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; or a master's degree in one of these fields and at least 3 years of technical engineering experience; or a bachelor's degree in one of these fields and at least 5 years of technical engineering experience; or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing integrated circuits, including pre-silicon work, first-silicon bring-up, or new product introduction.
  • At least 3 years of product and test engineering experience specializing in System Level Test.
  • Understanding of circuits and system hardware.
  • Experience with system-level hardware for CPUs, GPUs, or high-performance computing products.
  • Knowledge of system-level test architecture and infrastructure requirements, test-case development flows, and test-case generation and selection.
  • Proficient communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills, with the ability to lead, grow, and contribute to diverse and inclusive teams.
  • Understanding of product manufacturing and test processes, system hardware, software and firmware, and board-level schematics.
  • Proficiency writing software and scripts in industry-standard languages such as C#, Python, or C/C++.
  • Experience taking silicon products from pre-silicon readiness through first-silicon bring-up and production.
  • Experience defining, generating, selecting, and executing system-level test cases and analyzing their data.
  • Experience defining, generating, selecting, and executing system-characterization test cases and analyzing their data.
  • Experience with thermal control and feedback, and thermal management of higher-power devices.
  • Experience using debug tools such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, SMUs, and VNAs.
  • Experience with SLT performance applications, including power-management features, mode optimization, and voltage margining/checking.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data and debugging system failures.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with datacenters, CPUs, AI, machine learning, or digital neural networks would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of system-level test (SLT) and platform strategies, requirements, tools, and methodologies across hardware and software.
  • Collaborate with team members and partner teams to develop and integrate hardware, firmware, content, and automation solutions for the SLT platform.
  • Perform product characterization and power/performance correlation from system to ATE.
  • Generate and use correlation, characterization, and performance data to optimize outgoing quality and power/performance.
  • Define, guide, and contribute to software automation infrastructure for SLT and system-to-tester correlation activities.
  • Manage multiple development activities across a variety of product groups.
  • Triage and debug system-level failures across silicon, hardware, and software.
