About The Position

To acquire the necessary job skills to perform real-time operations of Bulk Power Systems (BPS) performing real-time actions during normal and emergency conditions to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System (BES). A System Operator I will be required, within 9 months, to obtain a NERC Certification (BT or RC) and within an additional 6 months to complete AEPCO/NERC Qualification Card.

Requirements

  • Four years of prior work experience in one of the following areas or a combination of the following areas: Electric utility operations, Technical profession in the utilities field, Related engineering position
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate logs of daily tasks related to generation, transmission
  • Required to obtain NERC certification (BT or RC) within 9 months.
  • Required to pass the AEPCO/NERC Qualification Card within 6 months after obtaining NERC Certification.
  • High level of critical thinking skills.
  • High level of multi-tasking abilities.
  • Above average mathematical aptitude.
  • High level of communication skills including 3-part communications.
  • Reasonable mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to pass 7-Year background check.
  • High computer literacy.
  • Basic understanding of electrical concepts (motors, generators, transformers, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of AEPCO operated power systems.
  • Testing required for skill, abilities, and interest.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience can be substituted for requirements listed above.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in applicable field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire the knowledge to take prompt and appropriate actions to maintain strict compliance with NERC/WECC Reliability Standards for system operations.
  • Acquire knowledge of all AEPCO operating procedures under normal and emergency conditions.
  • Acquire knowledge of all AEPCO reliability-related tasks under normal and emergency conditions.
  • To learn normal transmission and distribution switching.
  • Acquire Knowledge to monitor the power system for voltage control, power factor, and equipment loading.
  • Acquire knowledge to maintain system frequency and system stability.
  • Acquire knowledge to respond to Reserve Sharing Group (RSG) emergencies according to the RSG policies and procedures.
  • Acquire knowledge to monitor, assess, and approve E-tags within the OATI application associated with the AEPCO transmission system.
  • Become familiar with AEPCO and Metropolitan Water District transmission systems and how they intertie with neighboring systems.
  • Actively promote and maintain a team environment.
