About The Position

Idaho Power is looking for a Battery Energy Storage System Operator I or II to join their Planning, Engineering, and Construction team. This role is critical in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Company’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets. The operator will remotely monitor, control, and coordinate system operations under normal and emergency conditions using centralized control systems. Responsibilities include coordinating charging and discharging activities, responding to alarms and abnormal system conditions, and taking corrective actions to protect personnel, equipment, and system reliability. The role also involves coordinating field responses, exercising sound judgment in time-sensitive situations, and participating in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours support. Additionally, the operator will support continuous improvement by maintaining operating records, assisting with procedure updates, and coordinating outage and maintenance activities. Periodic work in CIP-designated control room environments and understanding of reliability and security requirements are also expected.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Operator I: High school diploma or GED
  • Operator I: 2 years of operations experience in a power/industrial setting or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Operator II: High school diploma or GED
  • Operator II: 5 years of operations experience in a power/industrial setting or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of BESS components and controls (BMS/EMS/SCADA), PCS/inverters, HVAC, fire detection/suppression
  • Knowledge of Substation fundamentals
  • Knowledge of Work management systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365
  • Knowledge of Utility safety practices
  • Knowledge of Basic networking/cyber hygiene
  • Skills in preparing technical reports
  • Skills in clear written and verbal communication
  • Skills in facilitating cross-functional work
  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities under time pressure
  • Ability to work independently and as part of high-performance teams
  • Ability to maintain data/records for compliance

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred: AAS in electronics, electrical technology or bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related field (for both Operator I and II)
  • Preferred: 2 years or more experience at IPC in a directly related area (Operator I)
  • Preferred: 2 years of experience with BESS, power production, or substations operational experience (Operator II)
  • Direct experience with utility-scale BESS operations/commissioning (Operator II)
  • Experience administering LTSAs and Asset Suite (Operator II)
  • Experience leading root cause analysis and corrective action plans (Operator II)
  • Preferred: Vendor BESS certifications (for both Operator I and II)
  • Preferred: Asset Suite, data historians (PI), SCADA principles, Utility Operations (for competitive candidate knowledge)

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Company’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets by remotely monitoring, controlling, and coordinating system operations under normal and emergency conditions.
  • Performs real-time operation of BESS facilities through centralized control systems, coordinating charging and discharging activities with Load Serving Operations (LSO) and other internal stakeholders.
  • Responds to alarms, abnormal system conditions, and events; takes appropriate corrective action to protect personnel, equipment, and system reliability.
  • Coordinates field response by BESS technicians and contracted resources as needed.
  • Exercises sound judgment in time-sensitive operating conditions that may have significant operational, financial, and system reliability impacts.
  • Participates in a rotating on-call schedule and responds to unplanned outages and emergency conditions outside normal working hours.
  • Supports continuous improvement of BESS operations by maintaining accurate operating records, supporting procedure execution and updates, and coordinating outage and maintenance activities.
  • May periodically work in or coordinate with CIP-designated control room environments and is expected to understand applicable reliability and security requirements sufficient to support compliant operations.
