About The Position

This position is responsible for providing knowledge and competency-based training to operating personnel who are expected to perform system operations control center functions required by Duke Energy. The role involves developing new and experienced system operators using established training methodologies and industry guidelines. Key responsibilities include analyzing, designing, and developing training materials to ensure system operators can reliably operate the bulk electric system. The position also requires evaluating learning through assessment tools and performance demonstrations using simulation technology. Successful candidates will be mentored by experienced trainers and provided with train-the-trainer opportunities, with an expectation to quickly develop the necessary competencies for the role. Performance will be evaluated, and individuals may be removed from the position if their overall performance does not align with the requirements of a System Operations Technical Trainer.

Requirements

  • Technical degree
  • In lieu of Technical degree(s), High School/GED AND 4 year(s) related work experience
  • For Senior System Ops Tech Trainer: Technical degree
  • For Senior System Ops Tech Trainer: In addition to required degree, four (4) year related work experience
  • For Senior System Ops Tech Trainer: In lieu of Technical degree(s) AND 4 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 6 year(s) related work experience
  • NERC Certified Operator
  • Excellent People skills.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the training and development of new Bulk Electric System Operators using the ADDIE Systematic Approach to Training, in accordance with NERC PER Training Standards and Duke Energy's System Operator Qualification Program requirements.
  • Overseeing the performance development of NERC Certified Bulk Electric System Operators through the ADDIE Systematic Approach to Training, adhering to NERC PER Training Standards, NERC System Operator Certification Program, NERC Continuing Education Program, and other regional/company-specific requirements. This includes writing NERC CE Approved Individual Learning Activity applications and executing training in compliance with applicable FERC Orders, including the FERC Standards of Conduct.
  • Collaborating with the Director and other trainers within the SysOps training organization to stay updated on current and emerging training practices, trends, and methods, and discovering innovative approaches to train system operators on relevant NERC Reliability Standard requirements.
  • Providing an optimal learning experience to operators, ensuring they have the necessary tools and content to perform real-time actions in normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions on the Bulk Electric System.
  • Communicating any observed emerging training tools and methods that could enhance the program to the Training Director for consideration.
  • Interfacing with file and data management tools to accurately document a System Operator's initial training and to document and track NERC Certified System Operators' continuing education training hours according to NERC System Operator Continuing Education Program guidelines.
  • Developing training for operationally-specific simulation scenarios, operating the training simulator, and developing content or collaborating with an e-learning SME to develop content for the web-based environment.
  • Handling unexpected training challenges (e.g., technology malfunctions) in the system operator training environment without compromising the quality of the learning experience, and keeping the Training Director informed of such activities.
  • Effectively engaging ECC GMs and Managers in the planning of training activities and keeping them informed of relevant training matters affecting their group's training.
  • Providing positive and professional interactions across the PGO Organization and demonstrating an “actively caring” attitude that represents Duke Energy's diverse and inclusive workplace.
