About The Position

Applied Materials is hiring a System Integration Engineer for the IPC Fusion program in Santa Clara, California. The role supports delivery of a next-generation optical inspection system for the advanced semiconductor packaging market. The engineer integrates, tests, and supports complex optical and electro-mechanical systems throughout the product lifecycle, from prototype builds through manufacturing ramp and customer qualification. This hands-on, high-visibility position involves working independently and with a multidisciplinary engineering team, troubleshooting system-level issues, and supporting product development and delivery.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent technical training combined with extensive hands-on experience will be considered.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience with complex electro-mechanical or opto-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve system-level hardware issues independently and methodically.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly schematics, and test procedures.
  • Familiarity with test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, power meters, spectrometers, and alignment tools.
  • Experience working in or around cleanroom environments and awareness of ESD and contamination-control practices.
  • Data collection and analysis skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including clear documentation of issues and resolutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Semiconductor equipment experience.
  • Python or MATLAB experience.
  • Experience supporting a product through multiple development or production lifecycles.
  • Experience with optical instrumentation, laser-based systems, or precision imaging equipment.
  • Background in calibration procedures, system metrology, or optical alignment.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing ramp, installation, or field service activities.
  • Experience working within a structured engineering team using change-control and documentation systems.
  • Knowledge of SECS/GEM automation or fab integration concepts.
  • Mandarin or Korean bilingual skills for customer-site collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, and functionally test complex optical and electro-mechanical subsystems.
  • Own and refine system test procedures, calibration routines, and diagnostic protocols, and maintain accurate records.
  • Troubleshoot system-level issues and perform root cause analysis independently; clearly communicate findings to engineering teams.
  • Support design verification and validation, providing practical feedback on design-for-build and design-for-test.
  • Develop and maintain build documentation, work instructions, and test procedures to support manufacturing ramp.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance system reliability, build efficiency, and test coverage.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior team members and lab technicians on procedures and best practices.
  • Participate in on-site customer support, installation, and qualification activities, including domestic and international travel.
  • Maintain schedule flexibility to support lab builds, validation runs, and cross-time-zone engineering collaboration.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Candidates may be eligible for participation in a bonus and stock award program, as applicable.
  • Supportive work culture that encourages learning, development, and career growth.
