System Integration Engineer, Optical III (E3)

Applied Materials•Santa Clara, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Applied Materials is hiring an experienced System Integration Engineer for the IPC Fusion program in Santa Clara, California. The role supports delivery of a next-generation optical inspection system for the advanced semiconductor packaging market. The engineer integrates, tests, and supports complex optical and electro-mechanical systems throughout the product lifecycle, from prototype builds through manufacturing ramp and customer qualification. The position calls for hands-on experience in semiconductor equipment or precision instrumentation, systematic troubleshooting, and effective collaboration with a multidisciplinary engineering team. The engineer will work with engineering teams on system integration, verification, validation, and manufacturing readiness. The role includes customer-site installation and qualification support, with travel stated as 25% in the role description; the additional-information section separately lists travel as 10%. Flexible hours are required to support lab builds, validation runs, and collaboration across time zones.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent technical training combined with extensive hands-on experience may be considered.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience with complex electro-mechanical or opto-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve system-level hardware issues independently and methodically.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly schematics, and test procedures.
  • Familiarity with test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, power meters, spectrometers, and alignment tools.
  • Experience working in or around cleanroom environments and awareness of ESD and contamination-control practices.
  • Data collection and analysis skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document issues and resolutions clearly.
  • Flexible hours to support lab builds and cross-timezone collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Semiconductor equipment experience.
  • Python or MATLAB experience.
  • Experience supporting a product through multiple development or production lifecycles.
  • Experience with optical instrumentation, laser-based systems, or precision imaging equipment.
  • Background in calibration procedures, system metrology, or optical alignment.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing ramp, installation, or field service activities.
  • Experience on a structured engineering team using change-control and documentation systems.
  • Knowledge of SECS/GEM automation or fab integration concepts.
  • Mandarin or Korean language skills for customer-site collaboration.
  • Experience bridging technician and engineering functions in a semiconductor equipment environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, and functionally test complex optical and electro-mechanical subsystems.
  • Own and refine system test procedures, calibration routines, and diagnostic protocols, and maintain accurate records.
  • Troubleshoot system-level issues and perform root cause analysis independently; communicate findings to engineering teams.
  • Support design verification and validation, providing practical feedback on design-for-build and design-for-test.
  • Develop and maintain build documentation, work instructions, and test procedures for manufacturing ramp.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to improve system reliability, build efficiency, and test coverage.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior team members and lab technicians on procedures and best practices.
  • Support customer-site installation and qualification activities.
  • Maintain schedule flexibility for lab builds, validation runs, and cross-timezone engineering collaboration.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Potential eligibility for a bonus program and stock award program, as applicable.
  • Supportive work culture that encourages learning, development, and career growth.
  • Programs and support for employee health, wellbeing, and personal and professional growth.
