About The Position

Viasat’s Government business delivers connectivity solutions to war fighters and customers across military services, intelligence communities, and international government markets. The System Design Engineer is responsible for generating and managing requirements, defining system-level architectures, and making detailed system design decisions.

The role works with Product Management, engineering leads, and customers to translate high-level product requirements into detailed system and subsystem designs. The engineer collaborates with development teams to refine these designs throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring they meet customer needs as markets evolve. The work requires attention to users and use cases, as well as technical understanding of data, backend services, cloud architectures, satellite communications, and networking. Travel may be required as needed, up to 10%.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in systems engineering design and requirements management, preferably related to data platforms, cloud-based application development, satellite communications, or networking.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Solid understanding of full-stack development frameworks.
• Ability to understand and develop system design requirements related to performance, security, and functionality.
• Ability to collaborate with engineering teams to align system design and architecture with customer needs while preserving implementation flexibility.
• Experience with large systems of systems and maintaining standards for intersystem compatibility and future scaling.
• U.S. citizenship is required for this U.S. Government role.
• Must hold a United States Secret Clearance.
• Ability to travel as needed, up to 10%.

Nice To Haves

• Understanding of agile software development processes.
• Some understanding of DoW CONOPs, users, and operating environments.
• Familiarity with data science, data processing, or AI/ML.
• Familiarity with requirements management tools such as Jama.
• Familiarity with the MBSE design process.
• Familiarity with MBSE tools such as Cameo.

Responsibilities

• Generate and manage requirements, define system-level architectures, and make detailed system design decisions.
• Collaborate with Product Management, engineering leads, and customers to translate high-level product requirements into detailed system and subsystem design solutions.
• Work with engineering development teams to iterate on system design solutions throughout the product lifecycle.
• Ensure designs consistently meet customer needs in an evolving market.
• Develop system design requirements, including requirements related to performance, security, and functionality.
• Work with engineering teams to ensure system design and architecture meet customer needs while allowing implementation teams appropriate flexibility.
• Be responsible for hardware and software product and platform success from early definition through maturity.
• Maintain consistent standards across large systems of systems to ensure intersystem compatibility and support future scaling.
• Facilitate discussions with engineering and product management teams about design tradeoffs.
• Travel as needed, up to 10%.
