About The Position

The Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) is seeking qualified candidates for a Systems Command Center Technician position on the evening shift. This role involves performing journey-level enterprise system and network operations control work. The technician will monitor, operate, and control systems and peripheral devices to ensure resource availability and status. Responsibilities include monitoring various systems, contacting on-call staff to resolve issues such as system and server failures, and performing startups, shutdowns, and other control functions for a multi-processing computer environment. The position requires keeping abreast of new developments in the information technology field through continuing education.

Requirements

Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
Requires one (1) year of related data processing experience.
Requires the ability to verify identity.
Requires employment authorization to accept permanent full-time position with the State of Illinois.
Requires the ability to pass a position specific, agency required background check and requires self-disclosure of criminal history.
Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties.
Requires the ability to work outside of normal hours to meet deadlines.
Requires the ability to use agency supplied equipment such as laptop, personal computer, work cell phone, etc.
Requires the ability to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, short notice, evening, weekends, and holidays.
Requires the ability to attend seminars, conferences, and training to remain current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to job duties.
Requires the ability to lift and carry objects or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. This is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

One (1) year of professional experience monitoring enterprise mainframe computer systems in a large-scale, multi-platform environment, including overseeing system performance, availability, and resource utilization by operating, monitoring, or controlling enterprise computer systems through automated tools, z/OS system commands, and menu-driven mainframe operations.
Working knowledge of mainframe operational system commands, including stops and restarts, system IPLs, and online commands using automated processes, in accordance with established procedures and checklists.
Developed verbal and written communication skills to present technical information clearly and precisely to diverse audiences, including business users, development teams, and agency executives.

Responsibilities

Monitor, operate, and control systems and peripheral devices and environments to ensure appropriate availability and status resources.
Monitor various systems and contact on-call staff to resolve any unresolved issues, such as system and server failures.
Perform journey-level enterprise system operations control work and computer control functions, including performing startups, shutdowns, system dumps (tasks, system, spool, etc.) and other functions for controlling a multi-processing computer environment.
Monitor mainframe systems and logs and respond to system issues to ensure appropriate availability of resources, including researching, resolving, and circumventing interruptions to processing components by following standard operational processes, procedures, and checklists.
Keep abreast of new developments in the information technology field by continuing education through online training platforms, meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences to increase familiarity with and remain current on products, vendors, techniques, and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Clearly document incidents, actions, and resolutions.
Compile and maintain accurate shift logs.
Update tickets to support audit and compliance requirements.
Monitor, analyze, and resolve system errors and interruptions, by applying standard operating procedures, written check-list procedures, and contacting on-call techs.
Analyze data logically and exercise sound judgement in defining and evaluating problems of an operational or procedural nature.
Gain and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, clients, and others.
Present technical information clearly and precisely to diverse audiences, including business users, development teams, and agency executives.
