USB & USB PD System Application Engineer

NXP Semiconductors•Chandler, AZ

About The Position

The System Applications Engineer provides system-level application support for products implementing USB 2.0/3.x/4, USB Type-C, USB Power Delivery, and DisplayPort (including DP Alt Mode). The role serves as a technical interface for customers, supporting design-in activities, architectural discussions, schematic reviews, and system bring-up. It also involves diagnosing system-level issues involving signal integrity, power delivery negotiation, interoperability, firmware interaction, and standards compliance. The engineer supports USB Type-C and Power Delivery architectures, as well as DisplayPort and DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C. In collaboration with silicon design, firmware, validation, and marketing teams, the role helps develop reference designs, application notes, and customer documentation. It includes participation in USB-IF and VESA compliance and interoperability testing, delivery of technical presentations and customer demonstrations, and sharing application feedback and customer insights to inform future product improvements and definition.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in system applications engineering, hardware design, validation, or customer-facing technical roles.
  • Hands-on experience with USB, USB-C, USB Power Delivery, and DisplayPort technologies.
  • Experience with system bring-up, board-level debugging, and hardware-software interaction.
  • Solid understanding of high-speed interfaces, power delivery architectures, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and customer support skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional and globally distributed teams.

Responsibilities

  • Provide system-level application support for products implementing USB 2.0/3.x/4, USB Type-C, USB Power Delivery, and DisplayPort (DP and DP Alt Mode).
  • Act as a technical interface for customers, supporting design-in activities, architectural discussions, schematic reviews, and system bring-up.
  • Debug and resolve system-level issues related to signal integrity, power delivery negotiation, interoperability, firmware interaction, and standards compliance.
  • Support USB Type-C and Power Delivery architectures, including Source/Sink, DRP, PPS, EPR, cable considerations, and protection schemes.
  • Support DisplayPort and DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C, including link training, MST, HPD behavior, AUX channel operation, and interoperability.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (silicon design, firmware, validation, and marketing) to develop reference designs, application notes, and customer documentation.
  • Participate in USB-IF and VESA compliance and interoperability testing; analyze failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop and deliver technical presentations, training sessions, and customer demonstrations.
  • Provide system-level application feedback and customer insights to support future product improvements and definition.
