About The Position

Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in El Dorado, Kansas. The Switchman operates a locomotive within a rail yard to move and position rail cars safely and efficiently based on switch lists. The role involves working in congested areas, operating track switches, and coordinating car movements while maintaining a strong focus on safety. The position also requires routine area upkeep, hazard awareness, and the ability to work independently in a physically demanding industrial environment. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent or the ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Valid Driver's License with no more than three moving violations in the past four years
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Dependable attendance and reliability

Responsibilities

  • Operates locomotive to transport material and spot rail cars utilizing instructions from a switch list.
  • Regularly operates locomotive in a congested area and must use considerable caution to prevent damage to rail cars or accidents to employees.
  • Operates switches and directs flow of cars in rail yard.
  • Maintains area in a neat and orderly manner and reports work hazards.
