About The Position

The Switcher is responsible for performing a variety of duties to support the division. This includes hands-on operation of all equipment in the yard with the ability and willingness to train other employees, coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments, reporting pertinent information to the owners, and responding to inquiries or requests for information. This position is classified as safety sensitive and requires compliance with all company safety policies and procedures, including drug- and alcohol-free workplace requirements. Individuals in this role are subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills.
  • Understand basic equipment and engineering terminology.
  • Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills.
  • Proficient teaching skills.
  • Proficient mechanical skills.
  • Proficient PC skills.
  • Visual and auditory skills.
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend, reach, climb, and lift items weighing 40 lbs. or less.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery, power tools, or equipment.
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle or commercial vehicle.
  • Ability to handle hazardous, volatile or flammable materials.
  • Ability to work in excessive noise environment.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and elements for an extended period.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in related positions.
  • Previous experience running outdoor heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of duties to support the division.
  • Discusses with supervisor daily and hourly goals and requirements for each department from Repair, New Car Line, Manufacturing, Blast & Paint, In Bound & Outbound Tracks, and Storage Yard.
  • Communicates with management on work schedule including future projects, inspection, and maintenance requirements of equipment for safe operation.
  • Communicates with management to safely move railcars and locomotives to appropriate departments based on schedule and ensure that they are chocked and/or handbrakes set.
  • Communicates with management to safely stage railcars in the appropriate yard location with the appropriate amount of handbrakes set.
  • Retrieves or places railcars on the Inbound or Outbound tracks and verifies that the correct railcars were moved.
  • Coordinates specific work tasks with other personnel within the department as well as with other departments to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information.
  • Communicates with Plant Manager and appropriate staff personnel in order to integrate activities.
  • Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the workplace.
  • Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the company’s compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from customers, other personnel, etc., within given time frames and within established policy.
  • Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual circumstances.
