About The Position

Under the guidance of the Aquatic Director, the Swim Team Coach is responsible for the implementation of the Competitive and/or Recreational swim teams at the Santa Monica Family YMCA. Following the YMCA Philosophy, Swim Team Guidelines, and the YMCA Competitive Sports Guidelines, the Swim Team Coach will be responsible for the organization, supervision, and implementation of the year-round Swim Crew and/or Swim Team season and clinics.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Current YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) Certification or American Red Cross WSI Certification (must obtain YSL within 6 months)
  • A minimum of two (2) years of competitive swimming experience
  • A minimum of one (1) year of coaching or instructing experience in an aquatic environment
  • Must pass practical skills exam prior to duty
  • Must obtain the YMCA Swim Lessons V6 - Advanced Swimming Techniques and Advanced Teaching Techniques within 60 days of hire.
  • Current CPR PRO/AED and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement age-appropriate swim training plans that support skill progression and stroke development.
  • Teach and demonstrate proper swim techniques. Adapt coaching methods to meet development needs of swimmers.
  • Create a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment that promotes confidence & skill.
  • Maintain active supervision of all swimmers during practices and activities.
  • Assist with promotion and marketing of the program through marketing channels such as flyers, social media, website, word of mouth.
  • Able to manage all age groups by developing a coordinated training and practice plan (Land and Water Exercises).
  • Set and evaluate swim team members individual goals; provide individual and team feedback for improvement and recognition.
  • Serve as primary contact for Swim Crew/Swim Team participants and families.
  • Communicate program expectations, schedules, goals, swimmer progress, cancellations, etc.
  • Address participant/parent questions, concerns, and feedback in a professional and timely manner.
  • Maintain & prepare equipment; ensure it is stored properly and reported for repairs.
  • Maintains records of attendance, skill development and progression.
  • Represent the YMCA at meets, various community events, meetings.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emergency procedures; report incident and accident events in complete and timely manner.
  • Promote the team philosophy and foster a positive and friendly practice environment for athletes in the water consistent with the YMCA Mission.
