About The Position

A YMCA Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming lessons. This role involves developing positive relationships with members and participants, providing motivational support and guidance, and encouraging member and parent involvement. Instructors are also responsible for conveying information on aquatics programs and schedules, and referring members and participants to other programs as appropriate. Key duties include maintaining required records (e.g., attendance, progress reports), attending staff meetings and trainings, and adhering to all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and emergency and safety procedures. The instructor must complete incident and accident reports when necessary, organize and put away class equipment, and report any damaged equipment. Additionally, the position may involve training and supervising class aides.

Requirements

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.
  • AED certification.
  • Basic First Aid certification.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification or previous experience teaching swimming.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment.
  • Ability to lift a small to average size child.
  • Must complete successful criminal background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  • Develops positive relationships with members and participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
  • Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
  • Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
