About The Position

Join our Aquatics Team to make sure everyone can enjoy the pool in a safe and welcoming environment. Whether you’re a lifeguard, a swim instructor, or a little bit of both, you’re going to love working in aquatics at the Y because you’re helping swimmers feel confident and gain experience in the water. No lifeguard experience? No problem, we’ll train you! This position provides leadership within the Aquatic Program and coordinates and supervises swim lessons under the principles of the Y Character Development; caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must be certified in CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid. (Training provided by the Y, if needed)
  • Must be 21 years of age or older and show technical skills in swimming instruction, lifeguarding and skills in supervision of others.
  • One year of previous supervisory experience is required.
  • Must have personal characteristics consistent with the Y Character Development Values.
  • Must be able to communicate with a variety of ages.
  • YMCA Lifeguard Certification (or from another nationally recognized certifying organization) or have the ability to obtain certification upon employment.
  • Should also possess Instructor certifications in swimming.
  • Will acquire CPO certification within three months of employment and receive additional YMCA aquatic certifications as trainings become available.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for program set up and administration through the Daxko operating system.
  • Responsible for all private swim lesson requests.
  • Responsible for refund requests and class change requests.
  • Assigned schedules of guarding and instruction by the Director.
  • Mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all participants.
  • Physically able to use both legs and arms to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200-pound person.
  • Physically able to see, hear and project the voice across distances.
  • Able to move to various locations, including in and around the swimming pool and sit in an elevated guard station.
  • Handle irate, complaining or demanding individuals without internalizing or personalizing comments made.
  • Remain physically able to demonstrate skills.
  • Assist in hiring, training and supervision of swim instructor staff.
  • Create work schedules for all swim instructors.
  • Teach aquatic classes and private swim lessons as needed and maintain direct contact with members and program participants.
  • Promote safety within the aquatics department assuring equipment and facility is maintained and staff is assigned.
  • Be a contact person when instructors or guards fail to show for assigned shifts.
  • Assist in marketing and scheduling of the swim lesson program.
  • Attendance at staff meeting is required.
  • Keep all reports current and turn them into the Director as scheduled.
  • Work a variety of schedules including evenings and weekends.
  • Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors and volunteers.
