About The Position

Provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Create a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED for the Professional Rescuer Certifications as well as Emergency Oxygen.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
  • 2 years of previous lifeguarding experience; or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with lesson plans and YMCA guidelines.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helping to build the connection with the YMCA.
  • Encourage parental involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Share information on aquatics programming and subsequent schedules.
  • As appropriate refer students and parents to other YMCA programs.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely program records including but not limited to attendance sheets, progress reports and accident/incident forms.
  • Understand, communicate and consistently apply all safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Report any unsafe conditions/equipment to supervisor immediately.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Participates in required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
