About The Position

This position will work under the direction of the Program Director to develop and instruct safe, enriching and effective youth and family swim programs that meet the needs of participants and the community. This is an evergreen role, meaning we are always accepting applications for this position due to ongoing hiring needs. Prospective employees are notified that the YMCA of Southern Maine may engage in electronic monitoring of employees. Information collected may be used for legitimate business purposes, including safety, security, compliance, and operational management.

Requirements

  • 16 years of age or older.
  • Certifications including: Professional Rescuer, CPR/AED/Basic First Aid, Emergency O2.
  • Successful completion of Principles of Youth Development, Youth Swim Lesson V-6 prerequisites and Swim Instructor class. (Required prior to working shifts as a swim instructor)
  • Redwoods Child Safety Training (or within 30 days of hire).
  • Detail oriented; extremely reliable, dependable, and punctual.
  • Ability to travel locally.
  • A criminal background check is required and may include fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire. This will be paid for by the YMCA of Southern Maine.
  • The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Creates a safe environment that helps all feel welcome and respected, promoting feelings of mutual respect, acceptance, and appreciation.
  • Provides safe, effective and creative instruction for individuals at all levels.
  • Provides quality and timely guidance, instruction and support to all members through proper instruction in group settings.
  • Educates adult members on current relevant principles, practices and research, and healthy lifestyle information as relevant to child’s swim class, or child, as interested.
  • Provides effective individual supervision and encouragement during program time.
  • Supports programming by teaching swim lesson, assisting with special Y activities and events, and other duties as needed.
  • Is a collaborative, engaged, and active participant in our Association, including communicating in an effective and timely manner and making sound decisions.
  • Develop positive, authentic relationships within the Y that lead to greater awareness of the Y’s mission and impact, growth in number of people served, as well as revenue.
  • Maintains a high degree of emotional maturity and interpersonal skills and is committed to personal growth and skill acquisition.
  • Maintains a professional and clean environment, including equipment and surrounding work areas.
  • Ensures all equipment is in working order and, if applicable, maintenance records are properly documented; reports any concerns to supervisor.
  • Provides rapid and timely response to all accidents, situations, incidents and emergencies appropriately, calmly and professionally using proper techniques and completes incident reports as needed.
  • Is an advocate for the Y by promoting our cause.
  • Supports philanthropy by increasing awareness about the annual campaign within the Y community.
  • Maintains accurate and consistent data tracking and documentation, as required.
