About The Position

The Part-Time Swim Instructor, reporting to the Wellness Center Director / Aquatics Coordinator, is responsible for providing adaptive swim lessons for individuals with disabilities. This role involves teaching water safety, stroke development, aquatic exercise, and swimming fundamentals, while modifying instruction to meet individual needs. The instructor will also ensure participant safety, maintain records, assist with aquatic programs, and prepare equipment. A positive, welcoming, and inclusive environment is essential.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Current CPR/AED Certification
  • Current First Aid Certification
  • Lifeguard Certification a MUST
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move in and around the pool environment
  • Ability to enter and exit the pool safely and assist participants as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to work in a warm, humid aquatic environment
  • Previous swim instruction or aquatic experience preferred
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals with disabilities
  • Strong communication, patience, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in adaptive aquatics or therapeutic recreation
  • Knowledge of water safety instruction techniques
  • Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Positive attitude with a team-oriented mindset

Responsibilities

  • Provide adaptive swim lessons for individuals with disabilities of all ages and skill levels
  • Teach water safety, stroke development, aquatic exercise, and swimming fundamentals
  • Modify instruction techniques to meet individual participant needs and abilities
  • Encourage participant confidence, independence, and skill progression
  • Maintain accurate attendance and participant progress documentation
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants in and around the pool area
  • Enforce pool rules, emergency procedures, and aquatic safety standards
  • Respond appropriately and efficiently to emergencies or behavioral situations
  • Maintain awareness of participant medical, behavioral, and support needs
  • Assist with aquatic wellness programs, recreational swim activities, and special events
  • Help prepare and maintain pool equipment and instructional materials
  • Communicate professionally with families, caregivers, and team members
  • Support a positive, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants
