About The Position

The Swim Instructor teaches swim lessons in accordance with YMCA of the USA guidelines, ensures participant safety, and creates an engaging and supportive environment for swimmers. The instructor adapts lessons to meet individual and group needs, assesses swimmer abilities, and guides participants through appropriate skill levels. The role also involves preparing and storing lesson equipment, maintaining attendance and arranging substitutes when needed, promoting YMCA swim programs, and supporting a clean, safe, and inclusive environment. Instructors are expected to demonstrate the Y’s values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Requirements

• Be of good character and reputation.
• Be capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities and accepting training and supervision.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing, as applicable to job responsibilities.
• Hold current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
• Obtain Oxygen Administration certification within 30 days of hire.
• Successfully complete the Y in Central Maryland swim test.
• Complete required new-hire training, including Child Abuse Prevention, before the start date.
• Have flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

• Prior swim instruction experience.
• Lifeguard certification.

Responsibilities

• Teach swim lessons using the YMCA curriculum and adapt instruction to individual and group needs.
• Enforce pool rules and maintain supervision to ensure participant safety during lessons.
• Assess swimmer abilities and provide appropriate progression through swim levels.
• Prepare lesson areas and required equipment, then return items to proper storage after lessons.
• Attend scheduled classes consistently; when unable to attend, secure a substitute and provide lesson plans.
• Engage positively with participants and encourage skill development in a supportive environment.
• Promote YMCA swim programs to participants and families.
• Support a clean, safe, and inclusive environment.
• Demonstrate and uphold the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
