SW Engineer Intern, AI Engineering

About The Position

Join Roku as an Engineering Intern and help build agentic AI for Roku’s TV streaming platform. This is a paid, 12-week internship running from June to early September 2027. Interns are assigned a scoped project with an engineering team matched to their skills and interests, and work on practical AI applications such as investigating failures, automating workflows, reviewing or generating code, and supporting complex decisions. With a mentor and ownership from day one, interns learn to take AI-powered ideas from prototype to practical use. Teams work across languages and technologies, including user interfaces, embedded software, platform services, automation, and developer tooling, and use AI-assisted development to improve productivity and quality. The role involves developing and evaluating AI agents, copilots, and automated workflows; connecting them with trusted data, services, and internal tools; and deciding when an agent can act autonomously or should hand work to a person. Interns use AI coding tools while validating their output through testing, review, and judgment. They write clean, tested, documented code and collaborate with engineers, mentors, and cross-functional partners. Roku generally works in the office Monday through Thursday, with Fridays generally flexible for remote work, except where a role or office requires five-day attendance. Applicants must have permanent UK work rights; candidates on a student visa cannot be considered. Applicants should be penultimate-year students or final-year students planning to pursue a one-year master’s course, and must be available full-time for the entire program.

Requirements

  • Be a penultimate-year student, or a final-year student planning to pursue a one-year master’s course.
  • Have a permanent right to work in the UK; candidates on student visas cannot be considered.
  • Be available for full-time work for the entire 12-week program, from June to early September 2027.
  • Be keen to work with AI technologies and have previous experience building AI agents and automated workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, ideally demonstrated through projects, open-source work, or hackathons beyond coursework.
  • Hands-on experience building an LLM-powered or agentic system that performs multi-step work, ideally used by someone other than the applicant.
  • Familiarity with agentic patterns such as grounding and retrieval, tool use, orchestration, memory, or conversational interfaces.
  • Sound engineering judgment, including checking AI-generated work, understanding failure modes, and recognizing when simple automation or human review is preferable.
  • A solid grounding in computer science fundamentals such as data structures, algorithms, and operating systems or networking concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving and technical communication abilities, including breaking down ambiguous problems and delivering in small steps.
  • A proactive mindset, passion for continuous learning, and ability to iterate quickly.
  • Fluency with agentic engineering tools such as coding harnesses (for example, Claude Code or Cursor), MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks; ability to direct agents, verify output, and use agent assistance to ramp up on unfamiliar codebases.

Responsibilities

  • Own a well-defined project that contributes to the team, from defining the problem through delivery.
  • Build and test AI agents, copilots, and automated workflows that perform meaningful multi-step work.
  • Connect agents to trusted data, services, and internal tools using approaches such as retrieval, tool calling, and orchestration.
  • Help define what an agent may do autonomously and when it should hand over to a person.
  • Evaluate performance, reliability, and failure modes, and improve work based on real feedback.
  • Use AI coding tools and validate their output through testing, review, and independent judgment.
  • Write clean, well-tested, documented code; participate in code reviews; and collaborate with engineers, mentors, and cross-functional partners.

Benefits

  • Global access to mental health and financial wellness support and resources.
  • Local benefits may include healthcare (medical, dental, and vision), life, accident, and disability coverage, commuter benefits, and retirement options (401(k)/pension).
  • Time off in accordance with local leave policies and other personal needs.
