SW Engineer Intern, AI Engineering

Roku•San Jose, CA

About The Position

Roku is hiring an Engineering Intern to help build production-grade AI agents for its TV streaming products and platforms. The paid 12-week internship runs from June to early September 2027. The intern will be assigned a scoped project with an engineering team matched to their skills and interests, working on challenges such as agents that investigate failures, automate workflows, review or generate code, or support complex decisions. With mentorship and ownership from day one, the intern will help take AI-powered ideas from prototype to practical use. Teams work across technologies including user interfaces, embedded software, platform services, automation, and developer tooling, and use AI-assisted development to improve productivity and quality. The role involves building and evaluating agents, copilots, and automated workflows; connecting them to trusted data, services, and internal tools; and applying engineering judgment to determine when agents act independently or hand work to a person. The intern will use AI coding tools, validate their output, write and document tested code, participate in reviews, and collaborate with engineers, mentors, and cross-functional partners. Applicants must be penultimate-year students or final-year students planning to pursue a one-year master's course, hold a permanent right to work in the UK, and be available for full-time work throughout the 12-week program. Candidates on student visas cannot be considered. Roku generally works from the office Monday through Thursday, with Fridays generally flexible for remote work, subject to role and location requirements.

Requirements

  • Be a penultimate-year student, or a final-year student planning to pursue a one-year master's course.
  • Hold a permanent right to work in the UK; candidates on student visas cannot be considered.
  • Be available for full-time work for the entire 12-week program, from June to early September 2027.
  • Have an interest in AI technologies and previous experience building AI agents and automated workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently be enrolled in a degree program in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, preferably demonstrated through projects, open-source work, or hackathons beyond coursework.
  • Hands-on experience building an LLM-powered or agentic system that performs multi-step work, ideally used by someone else.
  • Familiarity with agentic patterns such as grounding and retrieval, tool use, orchestration, memory, or conversational interfaces.
  • Sound engineering judgment, including checking AI-generated work, understanding failure modes, and recognizing when simple automation or human review is more suitable.
  • A solid grounding in computer science fundamentals such as data structures, algorithms, and operating systems or networking concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving and technical communication skills, including the ability to break down ambiguous problems and deliver in small steps.
  • A proactive mindset, passion for continuous learning, and ability to iterate quickly.
  • Fluency with agentic engineering tools such as coding harnesses (for example, Claude Code or Cursor), MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks.
  • Ability to guide an agent, verify its output, and use agent assistance to ramp up on an unfamiliar codebase.

Responsibilities

  • Own a well-defined project that contributes to the team, from problem definition through delivery.
  • Build and test AI agents, copilots, and automated workflows that perform meaningful multi-step work.
  • Connect agents to trusted data, services, and internal tools using approaches such as retrieval, tool calling, and orchestration.
  • Help define what an agent may do autonomously and when it should hand over to a person.
  • Evaluate agent performance, reliability, and failure modes, and improve the work based on feedback.
  • Use AI coding tools and validate their output through testing, review, and engineering judgment.
  • Write clean, well-tested, documented code; participate in code reviews; and collaborate with engineers, mentors, and cross-functional partners.

Benefits

  • Global access to mental health and financial wellness support and resources.
  • Local benefits may include healthcare (medical, dental, and vision), life, accident, disability, commuter, and retirement options (401(k)/pension).
  • Time off in accordance with local leave policies and other personal needs.
