About The Position

Old Dominion Freight Line is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented Dockworker to support safe and efficient freight loading, unloading, and material handling at a service center. The role uses forklifts, pallet jacks, and manual handling techniques to move freight and ensure the correct items are placed on the correct trucks. Freight must be properly positioned and secured with appropriate supplies to prevent damage and support reliable, on-time customer deliveries. The role is fast-paced and deadline-oriented, with frequent contact with service center personnel. Employees must be able to perform assigned duties, including work at varied times and shifts to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules. The schedule listed is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, with an overnight shift; workdays and shifts may change based on scheduling and business needs. The position involves exposure to varying weather, temperatures, noise, lighting, and work settings, including enclosed vehicles and trailers. Attendance is required. Old Dominion describes the position as full time. Requirements

High school degree or equivalent.
Working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures.
Working knowledge of procedures related to freight transportation.
Knowledge of freight loading techniques, including tight loading and cross loading.
Familiarity with freight movement forms and the ability to complete them when required.
Ability to use the dock yard management system to monitor shipment locations.
Availability to work as needed to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules, including varied times and shifts.
Ability to operate a handheld tablet when needed.
Ability to read, write, and speak English.
Ability to meet the described physical demands, including prolonged standing, walking, or sitting on a forklift; frequent squatting, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting; and handling freight of varying sizes and weights.
Ability to work in extremely hot or cold climates and in environments where noise and odors may be present.

Responsibilities

Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
Use loading techniques such as tight loading and cross loading.
Move freight and/or oneself throughout the service center, including on non-forgiving surfaces.
Use the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations throughout the service center.
Read and interpret shipping labels.
Use or, when required, complete freight transportation forms, including shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, and exception forms.
Hand-load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary.
Ensure trailers are loaded to the required quality standard.
Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, such as pallets, straps, and rope.
Operate a handheld tablet when needed.
Perform assigned duties and tasks as required to support customer pickup and delivery schedules.
