Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA
•$190,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is hiring a Sustaining Engineering Manager to own the hardware and software of robots operating at customer facilities. The role covers the product lifecycle after shipment: investigating field failures, identifying root causes, designing and validating fixes, and deploying changes across the fleet. Changes may involve parts, procedures, firmware, or software. The manager will build instrumentation and tools to identify problems proactively, work closely with field support engineers, and lead engineers across hardware and software. The role also involves writing code, hands-on hardware investigation, and direct customer communication, including explaining what changed when equipment has a problem.

Requirements

  • Experience sustaining a shipping electromechanical product, including owning post-launch changes and their consequences.
  • Understanding of mechanics, electronics, firmware, and software sufficient to determine which part of a machine failed.
  • Experience managing engineers and running a change process without letting it become mere paperwork.
  • Comfort communicating with customers whose equipment is down.
  • A habit of changing the underlying cause when a failure happens more than once.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robots or other hardware deployed at customer facilities.
  • Experience with root cause and corrective action, failure analysis, or reliability engineering.
  • Experience with field service or support engineering teams.
  • Experience with fleet software at a company operating robots or vehicles in production.

Responsibilities

  • Own hardware and software changes to robots in the field, from root cause through release.
  • Lead failures from investigation to closure by determining what to measure, identifying the cause, proving the fix, and preventing recurrence.
  • Build and deploy instrumentation on robots when the data needed to explain a failure does not exist.
  • Qualify fixes and roll them out safely to robots operating in production.
  • Hire and manage engineers across hardware and software, and work closely with field support engineers.
  • Communicate directly with customers when equipment is not working and explain the changes made.

Benefits

  • Fully employer-covered health insurance.
  • Managed 401(k).
  • Unlimited PTO and all federal holidays off for full-time salaried employees.
  • For hourly employees: 16 or more days of accrued paid time off and 1.5x pay on federal holidays.
  • Regular in-office meals and team social events throughout the year.
