Sustaining Engineering Manager, Robotics

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is hiring a Sustaining Engineering Manager to own the long-term performance of its shipping robots operating in customer facilities. The role is responsible for the robots as engineering products across both hardware and software, managing field issues from root-cause investigation through verified fixes and deployment across the fleet. Solutions may involve part changes, procedures, firmware releases, or software changes. The manager will build instrumentation and tools to identify issues before they affect customers, and work closely with field support engineers. The team writes code, works directly with hardware, and speaks with customers. The position includes hiring and managing engineers across hardware and software, qualifying changes, and safely rolling them out to production robots. Tutor uses the standard title for recruiting; employees in its R&D organization hold the internal title Member of Technical Staff (MoTS), with level determined through the interview process.

Requirements

  • Experience sustaining a shipping electromechanical product, including owning changes after launch and living with their consequences.
  • Understanding of mechanics, electronics, firmware, and software sufficient to investigate which part of a machine failed.

  • Build instrumentation for robots when the data needed to explain a failure is not available.
  • Qualify fixes and safely roll them out to robots operating in production.
  • Hire and manage engineers across hardware and software.
