About The Position

Bevi is seeking a firmware-focused Sustaining Embedded Systems Engineer to keep the electronics and firmware in its installed fleet healthy, reliable, and cost-effective. The role supports connected beverage machines already operating in the field and in production, investigating failures and preventing recurrence through firmware fixes and electrical improvements. It combines hands-on work at the lab bench with embedded development and collaboration with electrical engineering, manufacturing, quality, technical services, software, and contract manufacturing partners. The engineer leads root-cause investigations into field, factory, and returned-unit failures; implements and validates firmware changes; and works with electrical engineering on board-level fixes. The role also addresses component obsolescence and alternate sourcing, supports contract manufacturers with production yield and testing, and improves the reliability, serviceability, and cost of released products. The position reports to the Director of Embedded Engineering and works as a dotted-line member of the Sustaining team, which sets priorities for production and field issues and owns the cross-functional sustaining roadmap. The role requires travel of up to 10% and in-office work at least three days per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience developing and supporting firmware on connected electromechanical products, including meaningful experience with products in production and in the field.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems; FreeRTOS experience is a plus.
  • Experience debugging drivers and hardware interfaces.
  • Track record of root-causing complex hardware/firmware failures and driving corrective actions to closure.
  • Comfort using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD debuggers, protocol analyzers, DMMs, power supplies, and data loggers.
  • Hands-on familiarity with communication interfaces and protocols including UART, I2C, SPI, USB, CAN, Ethernet, and wireless technologies such as WiFi, LTE, and BLE.
  • Board-level skills including reading schematics and datasheets, PCB bring-up and debugging, and basic rework of SMT and through-hole components.
  • Comfort with git and sound software practices, including code reviews and release management.
  • Experience supporting ECOs in a PLM system and working with contract manufacturers on PCBA yield and quality issues.
  • Experience with component obsolescence management and second-source qualification.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements such as UL, FCC, CE/UKCA, and EMC, and with how design changes affect certification.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain failures and fixes clearly to engineers, Quality, and Technical Services.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% to contract manufacturers and customer sites.
  • Ability to work in the office at least 3 days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • FreeRTOS experience.
  • Circuit design experience; strongly preferred.
  • Experience with embedded Linux or Android (AOSP) on SBC- or SoM-based designs.
  • Experience with Python or similar scripting for test automation and log analysis.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Experience in food and beverage equipment, appliances, or other regulated consumer hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Lead firmware and electrical root-cause investigations into field, factory, and returned-unit failures using fleet telemetry, logs, failure analysis, and bench testing; maintain DFMEAs to capture and prevent known failure modes.
  • Drive corrective actions from defining and validating a fix through release and confirmation that it works in the field.
  • Triage and debug boot, platform, communication, and system-level issues across microcontroller boards and SBC/SoM platforms.
  • Support Technical Services and field teams with embedded diagnostics, troubleshooting guides, and issue escalations.
  • Own firmware fixes and improvements for products in the field, from root cause through implementation, testing, and release, following code review, version control, and release processes.
  • Debug firmware, driver, and hardware-interface issues involving peripherals, communication buses, timing, and power states; use lab tools and convert findings into lasting fixes.
  • Debug issues on embedded Linux/Android SBC/SoM platforms, including boot, kernel, driver, and connectivity problems, and work with Software on platform releases.
  • Work with electrical engineering on board-level issues, read schematics, distinguish firmware from hardware failures, and propose circuit changes when appropriate.
  • Support ECOs through the PLM system when firmware or electrical changes affect released products.
  • Improve existing products' reliability, serviceability, and cost, and measure the impact of changes using fleet data.
  • Build and maintain internal tools to diagnose, monitor, and control machines in the lab and field.
  • Monitor component lifecycle and supply risk; lead obsolescence, last-time-buy, and second-source qualification efforts.
  • Evaluate and validate alternate components, including electrical testing, firmware impact, and regulatory implications.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and contract manufacturers to resolve shortages while maintaining quality and compliance.
  • Work with domestic and overseas contract manufacturers on PCBA yield, test failures, and process issues.
  • Support and improve end-of-line testing, test fixtures, and test firmware so problems are detected before products ship.
  • Partner with Quality on failure trending, NCRs, and CAPAs for electronics and firmware.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Sustaining teams on problem solving within the 8D framework.
  • Help the Sustaining team prioritize issues, communicate status, and flag risks and timing impacts.
  • Feed field learnings back to Embedded and New Product Development teams to improve next-generation designs.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews for continuous-improvement changes, communicating risks, tradeoffs, and next steps.
  • Create and maintain documentation so critical knowledge is shared.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate debugging, code generation, log analysis, and documentation.
