About The Position

Penn State Sustainability is seeking a passionate storyteller to join their communications team as a Sustainability Storytelling and News Intern. This role is vital in creating engaging written content to showcase Penn State’s sustainability achievements to a broad public audience. The intern will be responsible for writing articles for Penn State News, creating and curating "Our Nature" student opinion blog posts, conducting interviews for "Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Snapshots," and compiling and editing the "Mainstream" newsletter. This position offers an opportunity to develop a high-quality body of work for a professional portfolio. The internship is available for an immediate start, with limited hours (5-10 per week) through summer 2026, and a regular academic year schedule (10-15 hours per week) beginning August 2026, running through Spring 2027, with a preferred option to renew for the 2027-28 school year. During the academic year, the intern will work an average of 10-15 hours per week, with flexibility for more or fewer hours based on capacity. Summer work can be up to 35 hours per week, based on availability. Most work can be performed remotely with regular Zoom check-ins, though some in-person hours may be required.

Requirements

  • Strong previous writing experience
  • Comfortable interviewing and interacting with high-level visitors, researchers, and leadership
  • Strict commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Submission of a resume
  • Submission of 2-3 writing samples
  • Submission of 200-400 words about what sustainability means to you, and why you are interested in sustainability communications and this role (this may serve as one of your writing samples)
  • Successful completion of background check(s)

Nice To Haves

  • Option to renew for the 2027-28 school year is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and prioritize writing assignments
  • Reach out to potential subjects for interviews and craft high-quality articles that promote sustainability initiatives, advancements, achievements, and ideals to various audiences
  • Draft development materials such as one-pagers
  • Occasionally attend sustainability-focused events to assist with communications-related needs
  • Publish our biweekly newsletter
  • Possibly create digital content such as podcasts, videos, etc.
