About The Position

The Town of Hanover is seeking a strategic, knowledgeable, creative, organized, and passionate individual who has the skills and experience to guide community-wide sustainability and renewable energy initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, helping position Hanover as a regional leader in sustainability. The Sustainability Director is responsible for the administration and management of the Town’s Sustainability initiatives. This position reports to the Director of Planning, Zoning and Codes and may work with Planning Director, Public Works Director, and Town Manager to complete tasks as assigned. This position provides leadership, technical expertise to Sustainable Hanover, its subcommittees, and other committees and boards as needed. This position acts as the staff liaison to the Sustainable Hanover Committee. In general, this position will advance municipal sustainability, renewable energy initiatives, and the Town’s 2024 Sustainability Master Plan Goals as well as “Ready for 100” goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a course of study related to sustainability; graduate degree preferred
  • At least three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience, preferably including experience related to sustainability efforts, project planning and management, community outreach, and municipal operations.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and renewable energy theories, principles, and practices
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to sustainability practices/renewable energy
  • Knowledge of municipal government operations
  • Skill in multi-stakeholder coordination and collaboration
  • Skill in directing municipal sustainability work
  • Skill in project budgeting, management, and communication
  • Proficiency with computers and related software and systems, such as Microsoft Cloud products. Ability to learn new systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to internal and external stakeholders in evaluating and advancing sustainability goals, such as the 'Ready for 100' goals and the 2024 Hanover Sustainability Master Plan.
  • Provide onsite staffing and meeting support to Sustainable Hanover, its subcommittees and boards as needed, which may include preparing and distributing agendas, providing technology and meeting logistic support, and/or writing and distributing minutes or follow ups.
  • Provide regular reports on sustainability efforts and trends and special analyses and reports for the Planning Department, Public Works, the Town Manager, and other departments as needed; provides technical assistance as requested and provides sustainability updates for the Selectboard and other Town stakeholders, both in reports and at meetings.
  • Designs and implements community outreach and engagement programming related to the Town's sustainability efforts, including communications, social media, and writing and distributing web-based content. Maintain current knowledge of professional, technical, and legal trends related to sustainability and renewable energy.
  • Identify grant opportunities and direct efforts to secure and administer sustainability-related grants. Network and coordinate efforts with Town departments, consultants, community volunteers, and boards and committees involved in sustainability initiatives.
  • Provides public facing engagement about the Town's sustainability efforts, such as meeting with members of the public, and other local and regional stakeholders concerning sustainability and speaking to local media. Respond to public inquiries regarding sustainability and renewable energy matters.
  • Assists in sustainability related budgeting, including for capital improvements, by providing advice and feedback related to sustainability initiatives, equipment, vehicles, and facilities throughout the Town's budget process.
