About The Position

The Boeing Company’s Defense, Space, & Security division is seeking a Lead or Senior Survivability Systems Engineer/Scientist to support multidisciplinary survivability tasks across all phases of satellite programs. The Survivability group analyzes spacecraft for space-environment disciplines, including contamination, micrometeoroids, single-event effects, radiation, electromagnetic compatibility, electrostatic discharge, and testing and qualification of new materials. The role applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to analysis, design, development, and verification of lifecycle-balanced systems and solutions. The position is 100% onsite in El Segundo, California, and is for first shift. Travel of 10% is required. An active U.S. Secret clearance is required, and the successful candidate must satisfy Boeing’s Conflict of Interest assessment process. The position is not contingent upon a program award.

Requirements

  • Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance; a clearance active within the past 24 months is considered active. U.S. citizenship is required for the clearance.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing technology), computer science, data science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, or a directly related non-U.S. equivalent qualification.
  • At least 9 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with spacecraft design, analysis, fabrication, and testing.
  • Experience with space environmental effects.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Must satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • For Senior, Level 5: at least 15 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or mathematics.
  • Experience with survivability-related analysis and testing for space environments, radiation effects, device physics, multiphysics simulations, and man-made environments.
  • Experience with survivability-related analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, MATLAB, MATHCAD, ANSYS, or COMSOL.
  • ABET-accredited education is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with technical disciplines to balance survivability, cost, weight, and technical risk in designs.
  • Execute and oversee analysis and testing of materials, units, subsystems, and systems in simulated space environments.
  • Analyze radiation-related effects, including total dose (including ELDRS and dose-rate effects), displacement damage, and single-event effects; internal ESD charging; micrometeoroid and orbital debris; and on-orbit contamination.
  • Plan and conduct testing at piece-part, slice, unit, and vehicle levels to support designs and verify compliance with survivability-related requirements.
  • Support survivability analyses and activities through all phases of satellite programs.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Relocation is available based on candidate eligibility; basic relocation is offered for eligible internal candidates.
  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
