About The Position

This role involves contributing to the City of Hamilton, a large Canadian city with a diverse economy and active community. The Survey Technician will report to the Senior Project Manager, Surveys, and will direct and work with a survey crew to plot and measure lines and angles within the City. The position requires the ability to independently develop ideas into completed projects as a survey instrument person.

Requirements

  • Proven knowledge of theories and practices in surveying, normally acquired by attaining a Technician Diploma in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Previous experience in leading a survey crew as a party chief in charge of a survey crew performing engineering surveys.
  • Experience in a computerized environment.
  • Experience and knowledge in surveying software with proven ability to upload, download and process survey data in Micro Survey, Bentley InRoads and Microstation.
  • Previous related experience in field data collection using total station and GPS receiver in conjunction with other survey field equipment.
  • Must possess a Class "G" Driver's Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and work with a survey crew using a wide variety of tools and equipment.
  • Input and retrieve survey data from survey hardware and computers.
  • Use survey instruments, data collectors and computers.
  • Perform topographic and construction surveys to City standards.
  • Search for survey evidence in the field.
  • Record, analyze, verify, calculate, resolve and define precise survey positions and measurements.
  • Analyze, edit and prepare raw data to finished project in digital and hard copy formats.
  • Locate underground cables, pipelines and sewers.
  • Perform confined space entries using Fall Arrest Systems and other related equipment.
  • Write reports, compile statistics, store data, update databases.
  • Develop horizontal and vertical geodetic networks.
  • Operate a City vehicle.
  • Receive and answer enquiries from staff, other departments, public and police.
  • Complete time sheets.
  • Train new staff.
  • Testify in court on behalf of the City of Hamilton.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.
