About The Position

ProtechGeo Surveying Ltd. is a new startup based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with a Survey team possessing decades of combined experience and expertise serving clients throughout Alberta. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Survey Crew Chief to join our field survey operations. Working closely with Alberta Land Surveyors, project managers, engineers, contractors, municipalities, and landowners, you will collect and verify survey data, and ensure tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest professional standards. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems in the field, and delivering accurate data that forms the foundation of successful survey projects.

Requirements

  • Diploma or certificate in Geomatics, Survey Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of field survey experience, including experience leading field crews or working in a senior survey role.
  • Proficiency operating GNSS/GPS equipment, robotic total stations, digital levels, and survey data collection software.
  • Strong understanding of survey principles, field procedures, coordinate systems, and measurement techniques.
  • Experience performing legal, engineering, and construction surveys.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
  • Physically capable of walking long distances, carrying equipment, and working in remote or active construction environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on Alberta legal surveys under the supervision of an Alberta Land Surveyor.
  • Familiarity with Alberta Land Surveyors' Association standards and regulations.
  • CSTS, First Aid, Ground Disturbance, H2S Alive, and WHMIS safety certifications.
  • Experience with Topcon survey equipment and software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a survey crew performing legal, engineering, and construction surveys throughout Alberta.
  • Plan daily field activities, establish project priorities, and ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment including GNSS/GPS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and data collectors.
  • Collect precise field measurements, observations, and survey evidence required for legal and engineering survey projects.
  • Perform construction layout and staking for commercial, residential, municipal, and infrastructure projects.
  • Locate property boundaries, survey monuments, underground utilities, easements, rights-of-way, and other critical survey features.
  • Verify field data quality before leaving site, reducing costly return visits and project delays.
  • Troubleshoot field challenges and identify practical solutions when site conditions don't match project assumptions.
  • Coordinate closely with Alberta Land Surveyors and drafters to ensure field information is complete and accurate.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, sketches, and written / electronic records.
  • Ensure company equipment, vehicles, and survey instruments are properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Mentor and train Survey Assistants and Junior Survey staff, helping develop the next generation of survey professionals.
  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with company, client, and regulatory requirements.
