Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • BLS Required (American Heart Association).
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program through NBSTSA.
  • Certification required upon hire.
  • Cert Surgical Technologist.
  • Basic Life Support Cert.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • One-Two year experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist in a large complex Operating Room.
  • NYU Surgical Tech Program graduate.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of a licensed professional nurse, scrub on all surgical procedures in the Operating Room and assist the physician in procedural areas.
  • Take initiative to make recommendations to leadership for new and updated Physician preference cards timely and accurately.
  • Utilize patient procedure and position to determine the plan of care.
  • Anticipate and gather needed supplies and equipment prior to care based on the procedure preference card and escalate outstanding needs with the RN Circulator.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Under the supervision of the circulating RN, assist on procedures as a secondary circulator.
  • Report unexpected events and outcomes to RN staff/leadership in a timely fashion, including counts, specimens, and breaks in aseptic techniques.
  • Provide proficient On-call coverage where applicable.
  • In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, ensure specimens are appropriately identified and labeled.
  • Support the mission, philosophy, standards, goals, and objectives of the institution, department, and service line.
  • Contribute to quality and performance improvement programs and unit/service-specific metrics, data collection, and projects (e.g., turnover times, On-time starts, Time Out, patient satisfaction, instrumentation, waste, sustainability, ACA/RCA, committee participation).
  • Participate in programs and activities to promote satisfaction of patients, families, staff, and other disciplines.
  • Incorporate new practices identified in patient care standards into the plan of care.
  • Respond to changes in patient care and standards for patient care activities.
  • Demonstrate awareness of JCAHO, DOH, and CARF, AST standards.
  • Interact with respect and in a positive manner.
  • Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team and promote collegial relationships.
  • Give a thorough report to the RN Circulator, relief scrub person, and leadership concerning counts, equipment, instrumentation, or outcomes.
  • Demonstrate professional responsibilities and accountabilities as a team member.
  • Accept responsibilities and demonstrate accountability for own actions.
  • Utilize resources to meet individual learning needs (e.g., Standards, Procedure Preferences).
  • Seize opportunities for learning experiences for oneself or to be shared with others.
  • Guide staff and students to use clinical resources to enhance knowledge.
  • Participate in the orientation of new and current staff to the scrub role intraoperatively.
  • Active participant in the Clinical Preceptor program.
  • Participate in providing feedback as requested.
  • Engage in self-assessment and participate in activities to promote own professional growth and development, take initiative to seek out new clinical experiences, and communicate to leadership.
  • Fulfill annual mandatory education program requirements.
  • Obtain/Maintain Certification.
  • Member of organization.
