About The Position

Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, performs the duties of a primary or secondary surgical technologist in surgical procedures. This role requires advanced knowledge of aseptic technique and surgical instrumentation, and the ability to function within multiple specialty areas. The Surgical Technologist creates and maintains a sterile field, anticipates the needs of the surgical team, and ensures patient safety through accurate counts and proper disinfection procedures. This position also involves participating in unit development, problem-solving, and cost reduction efforts. The role is considered safety sensitive under the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Use and Patient Protection Act.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) or by the State.
  • Certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • CPR certification.
  • Certified Surgical Tech (CST) level I for 2 years or more and ability to meet additional criteria as required by CST clinical ladder.
  • Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique.
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical instrumentation and ability to prepare instrumentation set based on specialties.
  • Ability to function within multiple specialty areas as a resource.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and maintains a sterile field; anticipates and provides instrumentation and supplies necessary to perform surgery.
  • Facilitates patient flow through case turnover.
  • Performs environmental activities to maintain asepsis of operating room.
  • Anticipates needs in instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to technique procedure, and special requirements.
  • Maintains correct sponge, needle, and instrument count with registered nurse and reports discrepancies as policy requires.
  • Performs high level disinfection.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendation for changes in practice consistent with aseptic technique.
  • Evaluates surgeon's preference cards and specialty instrument sets and makes recommendations for change.
  • Assists surgical team as primary and/or secondary surgical technologist when directed by a registered nurse.
  • Reports unusual incidents to circulating nurse.
  • Demonstrates competency in multiple specialty team cases and serves as a preceptor.
  • May function as a specialty resource person utilizing this expertise.
  • Participates in unit operational development by serving on a committee and presenting in-service education as needed.
  • Participates in department CQI, problem-solving and cost reduction efforts.
  • Responds to and must take emergency call, if applicable.
