About The Position

Wellstar is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join their team. This role functions under the direction of a registered nurse and assists in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. The Surgical Technologist will support healthcare teams in moderate to high acuity surgical cases, anticipating the needs of surgeons and other team members. They will demonstrate proficiency in surgical procedures, instrument troubleshooting, and maintaining a sterile field. The position involves preparing the operative suite, gathering supplies, and potentially serving as a surgical assistant. Additional duties include assisting with inventory, stocking, and ensuring compliance with Joint Commission standards. Call or late coverage may be required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma General or GED General or Accredited Program Surgical Technology
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care
  • Ability to delegate to other team members as required
  • Ability to multi-task essential
  • Ability to function in stressful and emergency situations essential
  • Strong detail orientation required
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures required
  • Basic computer skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the health care team in providing safe, age-appropriate and culturally aware patient care.
  • Prepare the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
  • Maintain the sterile field and address other patient safety concerns.
  • Gather required instruments, supplies, and serve as surgical assistant as needed.
  • Assist with inventory, ordering, and stocking ORs and additional perioperative areas.
  • Ensure unit compliance with Joint Commission standards.
  • Perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Troubleshoot instruments and equipment.
  • Mentor, precept, or train in various modalities.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare case carts according to procedure and preference cards.
  • Review surgical schedule and assist with preparation for future cases.
  • Observe patients' condition and report any changes or significant findings.
  • Plan for the next steps in the progression of procedure and adjust when an emergency arises.
  • Prepare OR room and other areas for receiving patients, including stocking, cleaning, turning over rooms, ordering supplies, preparing instruments, and notifying specialty staff.
  • Maintain financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with between case and terminal cleaning of rooms.
  • Assist in preparing the room for the next patient.
  • Assist in transporting patients.
  • Provide comfort and safety measures for specific age patients.
  • Seek opportunities to improve processes and collaborate with the health care team.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and flexibility in assignments.
  • Complete all initial and annual competencies, required mandatory education, population specific education, and CBLs.
  • Provide a positive learning environment for students and new hires.
  • Strive to make the Wellstar Standards of behavior part of daily work activity.
  • Participate in any new training related to new policies, processes, or equipment.
  • Retain new information and implement new processes or new equipment.
  • Serve as a resource for new technology or procedures introduced by surgeons.
  • Maintain twenty (20) hours in continuing education related to field per evaluation period.
  • Support licensed staff as requested by utilizing skills and equipment in which he/she is competent.
  • Care for surgical equipment and accessories.
  • Ensure organization and cleanliness of the surgical area.
  • Maintain stock/medical supplies.
  • Assume responsibility for other duties as assigned.
  • Complete all Success Factor Requirements by planning with charge nurses and managers if necessary.
  • Comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
