About The Position

The Surgical Technologist assists the surgical team, under the direction of a professional nurse, in providing skilled care for any patient undergoing surgical procedures. This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, with a schedule that includes day and evening shifts, a mix of 12-hour and 8-hour shifts weekly, and participation in holiday, weekend, and trauma call rotations. The role involves demonstrating proficient clinical skills in the scrub role, handling instruments and equipment, maintaining aseptic technique, and actively participating in learning new procedures and techniques. The technologist also provides feedback on preference cards, adheres to safety rules, responds to crisis situations, participates in care planning for various patient age groups, and communicates effectively with patients, families, employees, and physicians. They are responsible for reporting unsafe activities and performing other related duties as required. Daily contact is expected with patients, employees, physicians, and students, with intermittent contact with families, visitors, and community agencies. The role provides direction to PATs and support service personnel and receives supervision from the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Managers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited, approved surgical technologist program for any employee hired after 2009.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to scrub responsibilities for the care of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in the OR.
  • Ability to act independently within established procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to perform specific unit tasks as assigned by the RN.
  • Ability to exercise judgement, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to make decisions utilizing sound judgement.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to utilize computer and keyboard.
  • BCLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficient clinical skills in the scrub role.
  • Demonstrates ability to scrub on a wide range of procedures.
  • Demonstrates solid knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the handling of instruments/equipment in the OR and aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates openness to learning scrub techniques for new procedures and new instrumentation/equipment and receiving feedback concerning clinical skills.
  • Actively works with leadership to identify own learning needs and seeks opportunities to meet these learning needs.
  • Provides ongoing feedback to Assistant Nurse Manager concerning preference cards and tray contents.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing concern for safety by adhering to established safety rules and practices.
  • Responds appropriately to crisis situations as outlined in unit specific standards, initiates interventions within scope of responsibility and notifies circulating RN of all issues.
  • Participates in the planning of care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development.
  • Functions as an effective team member, supporting the concept of team training.
  • Actively participates in unit activities.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, employees, and physicians, both verbally and in writing.
  • Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
