About The Position

Responsible for scrubbing in and assisting the physician for cases. After completion of each case, the surgical technologist will be on standby for sterile technician needs which includes the following aspects of sterile processing to include decontamination, preparation packaging sterilization and sterile storage while adhering to department policies and procedures. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification from an accredited program or completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the army, navy, air force, marine corps, or coast guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service
  • Current BLS

  • Diploma from an approved Surgical Technologist Program and/or associate degree in a related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Scrubbing in and assisting the physician for cases.
  • Being on standby for sterile technician needs after case completion.
  • Performing decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, and sterile storage adhering to department policies and procedures.
  • Assisting materials manager in maintaining inventories.
  • Monitoring and ordering supplies to maintain par levels.
  • Providing encouragement to team members, communicating team goals, and identifying areas for new training or skills checks.
  • Assisting management with new team member training.
  • Protecting patient and family privacy rights and maintaining confidentiality of patient records.
  • Organizing workflow, problem-solving, and managing multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Receiving information from various sources, assimilating, and communicating it accurately, timely, and effectively.
  • Identifying and following manufacturer's instructions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instrumentation, flexible scopes, and equipment.
  • Adhering to the proper handling of garbage, linen, and biohazardous materials.
  • Maintaining awareness of safety hazards.
  • Facilitating room turnovers.
  • Assembling and preparing instrumentation for sterilization.
  • Consistently using count sheets to correctly assemble, protect, wrap, containerize, and/or peel pack and label instrumentations.
  • Identifying and inspecting instruments for cleanliness and functionality.
  • Selecting appropriate sterilization methods.
  • Following manufacturer's recommendations for sterilization methods.
  • Properly documenting and verifying sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process.
  • Properly handling sterile product and ensuring stock is placed in the proper location.
  • Preparing carts from pick lists.
  • Delivering instrumentation to the operating room as needed.
  • Consistently making rounds through the operating rooms and confirming instrumentation needs are met.
  • Troubleshooting problems and repairs.
  • Reviewing instrumentation needs management.
  • Inventorying and stocking operating par levels for stored instrumentation and emergency carts.
  • Working with specialty surgical instrumentation.
  • Participating in staff and self-development meetings/in-services.
  • Proficiency in utilization of instrumentation tracking system.
  • Maintaining professional competence and certifications.
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
  • Acting as a resource; giving advice and instructions to employees; coaching staff on assigned tasks; facilitating problem/issue resolution.
  • Acting as an expert/super user for equipment, technical problems, and for advanced or difficult procedures.
  • Making, coordinating, and monitoring daily work assignments.
  • Giving input/feedback to management relative to employee performance.
