About The Position

The role assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. Maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field. Demonstrates high-level critical thinking and problem solving skills to support surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure that surgeries run smoothly and safely. The Surgical Technologist, Lead is an advanced practitioner who serves as a mentor and role model for other technologists and consistently performs the preceptor role in training new colleagues.

Requirements

  • Graduate from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program
  • Graduate from a military Surgical Technology program
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing with NYS current LPN licensure (must obtain nationally accredited certification within 12 months).
  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTS) and degree in Surgical Technology required
  • At least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between 12/31/2010 - 12/31/2014 (Grandfathering Clause).
  • Must graduate from an accredited program and obtain nationally accredited certification within 24 months of hire (Hard-to-Fill Clause).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field, including setup of instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques.
  • Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, managing surgical counts, and preparing dressings, with expertise across multiple specialties (e.g., ortho, neuro, cardiovascular).
  • Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and surgical protocols, including emergency procedures.
  • Mentor and precept new surgical technologists, conduct competency assessments, and deliver continuing education sessions.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives, maintain CME requirements, and contribute to unit goals, committee work, and specialty service support.
