This role involves assisting in operations under supervision, which may include setting up the operating room, preparing and transporting patients for surgery, adjusting lights and equipment, passing instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and helping count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. The position requires active participation as a member of the Patient Care Team, monitoring operating room conditions, and preparing patients for surgery by positioning them and covering them with sterile surgical drapes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting 2-3 years required
  • Knowledge of SPD Sterile Room.
  • Ability to multitask, can work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of sterile processing procedures and policies.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and departmental supply items is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Four (4) years experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting; committee and leadership experience 3-5 years preferred
  • Certified Surgical First Assistant [CSFA (NBSTSA)] - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred
  • Certified Surgical Technologist [CST] - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists in operations under supervision.
  • May help set up the operating room.
  • Prepare and transport patients for surgery.
  • Adjust lights and equipment.
  • Pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants.
  • Hold retractors.
  • Cut sutures.
  • Help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
  • Participates in time-out procedures.
  • Attainment of extra supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Sets up equipment independently.
  • Participates as an active member of the Patient Care Team.
  • Monitor and continually assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure.
