About The Position

UPMC Travel Staffing is seeking Surgical Technologists with two years’ experience within the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR), interested in joining our team. As a UPMC Travel Staffing employee, you will experience travel and flexibility, with the potential to rotate to a new hospital and unit every 6 weeks, all while being assigned to cardiovascular operating rooms throughout the system. Requirements

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) required. Staff employed to practice surgical technology by the health care facility on or before the effective date of the law (12/28/2020) or who were employed as a surgical tech at another health care facility two years before the effective date of the law are grandfathered and therefore not required to have certification. New graduates of a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation can work for six months before certification, but must be certified within six months of program completion.
Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital, or the military.
PA legislature House Bill 81 enacted 10/29/2020 and became effective 12/28/2020: Must have completed a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintain certification or Has completed an appropriate military training program or Maintains certification from an accredited program or Was employed as a surg tech in a health care facility on or before effective date of the act (12/28/2020) or Employed as a surg tech at another health care facility two years before effective date (12/28/2020).
Continuing education requirements: Compliance with continuing ed requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification. For individuals not certified – must complete 30 hours of continuing ed every two years.
Demonstrated competence in operating room as surgical technologist.
Minimum of 2 years of cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) experience required.
Must work 40 hours per week, 80 hours in a bi-weekly pay period, including but not limited to: day, night, weekend and holiday shifts.
Must be willing to work 8-, 10- and 12-hour shifts, depending on need to operating room assigned.
On call required.
Will be assigned to a Cardiovascular operating room.
Must travel to all UPMC facilities including but not limited to UPMC facilities in Southwest, Northwest PA and NY, Central, West Central PA and MD, and North Central PA.
Willing to rotate assignments on a six-week basis with potential to redeploy to another facility mid-assignment.

The ability to scrub in any specialty is highly preferred.
Cerner or Epic electronic health record experience preferred.

Communicate educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned.
Function independently with one day of orientation, unless otherwise specified. Maintain critical thinking skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care. Cultivate professional relationships and communication in the clinical environment.
Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital-related information.
Ensure a clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique. Perform work in a timely and productive manner.
Preparation of operating room before operational services by preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure functionality.
Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
Assist in the transfer of patients to the operating room and on and off the surgical table, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
Count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments according to policy.
After surgery, it may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.
Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to the surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
Maintain critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in the application of surgical technology.
Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and help apply dressings.
Establish appropriate, assertive, and professional communication strategies. Strengthen interdisciplinary relationships with members of the health care team. Coordinate interdepartmental activities to expedite care.
During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site, and assist with counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
