About The Position

The Surgical Technologist Certified is responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures, anticipating the surgeon's needs, and maintaining a sterile field to ensure quality patient care. This role involves assisting the surgical team before, during, and after surgery, including preparing the operating room, assisting with patient positioning, and maintaining sterile technique. The technologist also plays a role in performance improvement, fostering positive interpersonal relationships, and understanding age-related patient care needs. Additionally, this position involves adapting to physician preferences, mentoring new employees and students, and supporting their professional growth and certification attainment. The role may also include completing assigned projects and assisting in training new partners or students.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program required
  • Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA
  • Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
  • LPN grandfathered (3) at Rockford campus in lieu of Surgical Technology program.
  • IL LPN Licensure grandfathered (3) at Rockford campus in lieu of Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA.

Responsibilities

  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon based on understanding the procedure being performed.
  • Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintains the sterile field.
  • Checks instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions.
  • Assists with patient placement and positioning on the table.
  • Assists in draping the sterile field according to procedure/physician preference.
  • Performs counts for sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulator.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
  • Creates and maintains the sterile field.
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • May sponge operative site, hold retractors, cut suture, and cauterize vessels as directed by the surgeon.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and applies them if applicable and directed by the surgeon.
  • Assists with cleaning the operating room after each procedure.
  • Assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains positive interpersonal relations with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
  • Understands and provides age-related patient care needs appropriately.
  • Adapts to physician needs, requests, and preferences and communicates them to the Team Lead.
  • Serves as a mentor for new employees and new graduate surgical technologists.
  • Promotes attainment of national certification for partners.
  • Assists partners in obtaining education required for national specialty certification.
  • Completes projects as assigned by the Team Lead.
  • Assists in training new partners or students and provides constructive feedback.
