About The Position

The Surgical Technician prepares and organizes the operating room with instrumentation and equipment, assists surgeons during surgical procedures, and maintains a sterile environment. This role requires knowledge of medical and surgical care principles, surgical positioning, common safety hazards, and maintaining quality control standards. The technician will also assist physicians in wound care, splint/dressing application, and dressing changes.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a recognized and accredited Surgical Technologist Program.
  • BLS Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • NBSTA Certification as a surgical technologist preferred.
  • Certificate from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting / or eligibility to certify.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares operating room for surgical procedures, assembling supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Assists in clean-up of rooms between procedures and at the end of the schedule.
  • Assists in monitoring and maintaining instruments, supplies, and equipment in the unit.
  • Maintains proficiency in knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and AORN / AAMI standards of asepsis.
  • Participates in the sponge, needle, and instruments count with the circulating nurse as needed.
  • Responsible for identifying and preserving specimens received during surgery.
  • Reports to supervisor any unusual occurrences, breaks in technique, malfunctioning equipment, any unsafe condition or potential hazard.
  • Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
  • Maintains the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of the patient.
  • Participates in the OSC emergency, fire, and disaster drills.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Follows all OSC Policies and Procedures.
  • Attends required in-services and educational programs.
  • Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
  • Assists physician in performance of procedures or test in clinical setting.
  • Assists physician in wound care, application of splints and dressings, and dressing changes.
