About The Position

The Surgical Technician is responsible for receiving reports and assignments, performing surgical hand scrubs, and preparing the operating room for procedures. This role involves checking case carts, verifying physician preferences, opening supplies, and setting up sterile fields. The technician assists the surgical team, anticipates the physician's needs, maintains a safe environment, and communicates important information to the Circulating RN. They are also responsible for instrument cleaning, dressing application, and patient transfer assistance. Additionally, the technician prepares for the next day's cases by assembling equipment and supplies, restocking, and handling special requests.

Requirements

  • A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives report and room assignment.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub according to procedure.
  • Damp dusts horizontal surfaces, tables, equipment, spotlights, and other mounted equipment prior to the first scheduled procedure.
  • Prepares for procedures by checking the case cart, reading physician preference cards, verifying equipment and supply availability, and opening supplies.
  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to procedure.
  • Sets up for procedures using back table and mayo.
  • Checks functioning and completeness of appropriate equipment.
  • Performs initial count with the Circulating RN.
  • Assists the team into gowns and gloves.
  • Assists the attending physician in draping of the patient and sterile field.
  • Watches the progress of the procedure, anticipates physician's needs, and maintains a safe environment.
  • Keeps the Circulating RN informed on specimens, changes in procedure, and presence of infection.
  • Keeps used instruments free of blood and tissue by wiping with a wet sponge (using only sterile water). Ophthalmic instruments may be wiped using BSS.
  • Prepares for and performs closing counts according to procedure.
  • Applies sterile dressing and protects it with a sterile towel.
  • Removes any remaining instruments from the operative/procedure field.
  • Confines gross contamination to the immediate area.
  • Removes prep solution from the patient's skin around the incision site.
  • Assists with patient transfer to stretcher/bed.
  • Takes instruments to the soiled utility room for processing.
  • Returns unused sterile supplies and equipment to proper storage areas.
  • Opens sterile supplies for the next case.
  • Checks the next day's assignment.
  • Assembles equipment and supplies needed for cases.
  • Handles questions concerning special requests and routine needs.
  • Checks and restocks supply cabinet, drawers, and anesthesia machine.
