About The Position

The Surgical Technician - Operating Room - Full Time position involves participating in surgical procedures, assisting the registered nurse with patient care, maintaining aseptic technique, and preparing sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment. The technician is expected to anticipate the needs of the surgeon during procedures. This role requires adherence to hospital and department-specific orientation, basic aseptic technique, and knowledge of instrumentation for minor and all cases. The technician will work with electrocautery, suction apparatus, surgical tables, and autoclave/steris processes, while understanding patient safety principles in the OR. Knowledge of surgical anatomy, terminology, and standard precaution guidelines is essential. The role also includes working with specialty equipment, functioning in an "on call" capacity, and potentially becoming proficient in a surgical specialty to manage equipment, order supplies, and conduct inservice training. Other duties include assisting in patient care under supervision, maintaining sterility of equipment with Central Supply, performing supportive functions, following safety guidelines and hospital policies, participating in PI activities, maintaining CPR certification, completing annual education and continuing education requirements, assisting in the orientation of new personnel, and completing in-services. The position requires flexibility with shifts and on-call duties, good judgment in interactions, quick response to schedule changes, cost and quality awareness, reporting patient condition changes, problem resolution through the chain of command, maintaining patient confidentiality, professional conduct, and the ability to coordinate simultaneous work requirements. The technician will accept additional responsibilities as permitted, work independently with minimal supervision, manage benefit time and attendance appropriately, provide timely notification for absence or tardiness, take appropriate breaks, adhere to the hospital dress code, and strive to be an effective and productive member of the department and organization. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician School, or LPN with a current license in the state of practice, or completion of a completed and appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United Sates Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
  • Must have general knowledge of surgical procedures and draw specialized training from working with physician or physicians on the job.
  • Maintains biannual CPR.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification preferred.
  • Experience preferred, but may be trained on -the-job, if recent graduate.
  • Certification as an OR technician recommended.
  • Completes at least 12 hours continuing education annually.
  • Maintains certification, if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Completion of hospital and department specific orientation.
  • Perform basic aseptic technique in accordance to policy and procedure of Corning Hospital.
  • Basic knowledge of instrumentation for minor cases.
  • Scrub minor cases alone.
  • Working knowledge of electrocautery, suction apparatus, surgical tables, autoclave and steris processes and patient safety principles in the OR.
  • Knowledge of surgical anatomy for each case scrubbed.
  • Know surgical terminology specific to each case scrubbed.
  • Knowledge of standard precaution guidelines of Corning Hospital.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation for all cases.
  • Scrub all cases offered in the Operating Room.
  • Knowledge of the use of specialty equipment, i.e.: ophthalmology microscope, laser, video endoscopy equipment, fracture table).
  • Certification as an OR technician recommended.
  • Functions in an “on call” capacity when assigned.
  • Becomes proficient in a surgical specialty to maintain equipment, order supplies and perform inservice training for OR staff as requested.
  • Participates in patient care under the supervision of the surgeon, professional nurse and anesthesiologist.
  • Is authorized to access secured storage areas in the performance of essential job functions and duties.
  • Assists in the care, preparation and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment.
  • Works with Central Supply staff to ensure sterility of equipment.
  • Performs supportive functions related to surgical procedures following principles of sterile technique.
  • Follows Standard Precautions and utilizes disease specific precaution guidelines as per CDC guidelines.
  • Utilizes and maintains surgical instruments according to manufacturer’s recommendations and department guidelines.
  • Follows hospital safety guidelines.
  • Follows all hospital Policies and Procedures.
  • Participates and actively supports PI activities.
  • Maintains biannual CPR.
  • Completes annual education update.
  • Attends and participates in Staff Development meetings.
  • Completes at least 12 hours continuing education annually.
  • Maintains certification, if applicable.
  • Assists in orientation of new personnel to the department as well as developing skills of other staff members when requested or appropriate.
  • Completes in‐services and self‐learn education programs as required.
  • Rotates as needed on all shifts and days as requested; regularly demonstrates flexibility on an “on‐call” basis.
  • Demonstrates good judgement and planning when responding to requests or questions while interacting with physicians, patients, and families.
  • Responds to schedule/assignment changes quickly.
  • Consistently shows good judgement by showing an appreciation of cost and quality.
  • Reports any changes in the patient’s condition to appropriate personnel.
  • Refers unsolved problems and consults with the appropriate person in order to pursue problem resolution through proper chain of command.
  • Respects, at all times, the confidentiality of patient’s records, the progress, and utilizes complete discretion when discussing patient matters.
  • Displays confidence and shows respect to patients, families, physicians, and other health care workers by performing job related duties in a highly professional manner at all times.
  • Readily assists, supervises, delegates or consults with other staff members when requested or appropriate. Requests assistance from others as needed.
  • Displays positive attitude/working relationships toward all internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrates ability and judgement to coordinate simultaneous work requirements. Completes all scheduled assignments without sacrificing quality of care performed.
  • Willing to accept additional responsibilities and duties related to the operation of the department as permitted.
  • Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.
  • Schedules benefit time appropriately. Acceptable attendance practices.
  • Provides timely notification for absence or tardiness (2 hours).
  • Takes appropriate breaks and returns promptly.
  • Observes hospital dress code: wears identification badge while on duty and maintains a professional appearance at all times.
  • Consistently strives to be an effective and productive member of the department and of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
