About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Specialty Coordinator/Registered Nurse, this position provides assistance to nursing staff by communicating changes in patient status and preparing the Operating Room (OR) rooms with necessary equipment. The Surgical Technician collaborates with the care team in the formation of the patient’s plan of care to achieve desired outcomes for the patient based on physician preference cards, current assessment findings, diagnostic reports, and standards of care/practice. They communicate safe therapeutic care for the patient throughout the patient’s perioperative experience, maintain and care for equipment and supplies, and prepare OR rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment. Following aseptic technique, they drape patients and assist the surgical team during operative procedures, and assist in the turnover of rooms between cases. They provide input for changes to physician preference cards according to surgeon's request, maintain a safe and orderly environment, and participate in the hospital-wide infection control plan and quality improvement process. This role requires effective communication, customer service, and team building skills, and the acceptance of responsibility for professional growth and development. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire
  • Graduate of an approved formal program to include one of the following: OR Technology, Surgical Scrub Tech, or Surgical Technology (six months experience preferred)
  • Licensed Practical Nurse eligible to practice in Virginia with one year operating room experience
  • Trained Scrub/Operating Room Tech with a minimum of seven (7) years hospital operating room experience
  • Must become a Certified Surgical Technologist within 6 months of hire.
  • Registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist required.
  • Constant (67-100% of workday) walking, standing, use of arms and hands
  • Frequent (34-66% of workday) bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Ability to push and pull 20 lbs.
  • Auditory and visual skills to include color determination
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
