About The Position

The Surgical Technician - Women's Surgery Unit position demonstrates a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various specialty procedures. The role requires competency in operating specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment for at least one tertiary specialty service. This full-time position operates within the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, specifically in the Women Surgery Unit, and involves providing peri-operative care to female patients undergoing elective surgical procedures and GYN Oncology Procedures. The department offers flexible nursing care for scheduled, urgent, and emergency cases around the clock, with 24/7 coverage for urgent and emergent cases.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technology training program or Orlando Health training program.
  • Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
  • Four (4) years surgical tech experience. (CST and two (2) years of surgical tech experience may substitute for the required experience).

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
  • Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
  • Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.
  • Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation.
  • Assists in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines.
  • In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.
  • Provides scrub services for major procedures in at least 2 surgical specialties (independently with high physician satisfaction).
  • Prepares and conducts technical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.
  • Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and/or second circulates on major tertiary procedures.
  • Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.
