About The Position

Scotland Health Care System is seeking a dedicated Surgical Tech to join our team at Scotland Memorial Hospital. This full-time position involves preparing for and assisting in surgical procedures, ensuring the sterility and proper function of instruments and equipment, and anticipating the needs of surgeons. The role requires excellent communication, organizational skills, and the ability to foster a teamwork environment. The Surgical Tech will be responsible for maintaining a clean and organized operative field, accurately reporting specimens and prosthetics, and performing various tasks to ensure continuity of patient care. This position also requires knowledge of age-specific competencies for patients across the lifespan.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for surgical procedures by identifying, selecting, and setting up instruments using aseptic technique.
  • Inspects all equipment, instruments, and packaging to ensure sterility and proper function.
  • Utilizes and understands sterilization principles in processing instruments and equipment.
  • Utilizes proper hand washing technique and prepares O.R. field according to standards.
  • Anticipates surgeons needs as to instruments and suture.
  • Keeps operative field neat, clean, and dry.
  • Properly identifies and passes specimens to circulating nurse after verifying with surgeon.
  • Accurately reports all prosthesis, drains, and catheters to circulating nurse.
  • Disposes of used supplies according to procedure.
  • Assists with room clean up and set up.
  • Returns reusable equipment and supplies to appropriate place.
  • Counts sponges, instruments, and sharps prior to operative incision, and at closure of any cavity according to standards.
  • Assists in properly positioning patient on table.
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks to facilitate continuity of patient care such as relieving at break, lunch time, and assisting with cleaning and restocking.
  • Is accessible when on call according to policy.
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of circulating RN and or surgeon.
  • Consults with other staff members when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedures.
