About The Position

Scotland Memorial Hospital - Surgery Room is seeking a full-time Surgical Tech. This role involves preparing for surgical procedures, ensuring equipment and instruments are sterile and functional, and anticipating surgeons' needs. The Surgical Tech will maintain a clean operative field, accurately report specimens and prosthetics, and assist with room cleanup and patient positioning. The position also requires performing miscellaneous tasks to ensure continuity of patient care, being accessible when on call, and demonstrating age-specific competency for patients across the lifespan. Services performed require technical or manual skills under the direction of a circulating RN or surgeon, with consultation available for unfamiliar equipment or procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for surgical procedures by identifying, selecting and setting up instruments using aseptic technique.
  • Inspects all equipment, instruments and packaging to insure sterility and proper function.
  • Utilizes and understands sterilization principles in processing instruments and equipment.
  • Utilizes proper hand washing technique and prepares O.R. field according to standards.
  • Anticipates surgeons needs as to instruments and suture.
  • Keeps operative field neat, clean and dry.
  • Properly identifies and passes specimens to circulating nurse after verifying with surgeon.
  • Accurately reports all prosthesis, drains and catheters to circulating nurse.
  • Disposes of used supplies according to procedure.
  • Assists with room clean up and set up.
  • Returns reusable equipment and supplies to appropriate place.
  • Counts sponges, instruments, and sharps prior to operative incision, and at closure of any cavity according to standards.
  • Assists in properly positioning patient on table.
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks to facilitate continuity of patient care such as relieving at break, lunch time, and assisting with cleaning and restocking.
  • Is accessible when on call according to policy.
  • Age Specific Competency: Staff members will have knowledge of human growth and development through the life span of the patient and have the ability to meet the needs of and provide the care of these patients. The age categories to be included are: Neonatal/Infant 0 - 11 months; Pediatrics 1 – 12 yrs; Adolescence 13 - 17 yrs; Young Adult/Adult 18 – 64 yrs; Adult/Middle-Aged 65 - 79 yrs; Geriatric 80+ yrs
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of circulating RN and or surgeon. Consults with other staff members when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedures.
