About The Position

Assists the surgical team with preparation and care of patients undergoing surgical procedures. This role involves opening and preparing operating rooms using aseptic techniques, setting up necessary equipment, and assisting the surgical team as directed. The position also includes cleaning and maintaining the operating room, decontaminating and sterilizing instruments, and preparing for upcoming cases. Additionally, the role involves assisting nurses with procedures, providing guidance to student interns, and upholding the organization's mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

Must be certified as a surgical technician
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent plus completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program
Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and correct terminology.
Knowledge of sterile procedures/aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures.
Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of patient care including HIPAA confidentiality and JCAHO mandates
Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation
Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and other health care professionals in the exchange of information
Mental ability to deal with the concerns and emotional needs of patients, and appropriately respond to stressful/emergency situations
Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, transfer/lift/ reposition/assist patients, and properly set-up/utilize the equipment/ devices necessary in providing patient care
Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job
Minimum of two years scrub experience required.

Responsibilities

Opens and prepares operating rooms utilizing aseptic techniques.
Determines room orientation, sets up necessary equipment/instruments/supplies for the day’s scheduled surgical procedures, and checks to assure equipment is working properly.
Assists the surgical team as directed, which may include passing instruments and other sterile supplies, holding retractors, preparing sutures/sponges/other surgical supplies, applying dressings, counting sponges/needles/supplies/instruments, and removing surgical drapes.
Performs cleaning and maintenance of the operating room between cases and at the end of the day.
Decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes instruments/equipment/supplies.
Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
Prepares for the following day’s cases by pulling patient charts, organizing equipment and supplies, and ordering necessary equipment/instruments/supplies for specialty cases.
Assists with cleaning, processing, sterilizing, and preparing surgical instrumentation and patient supply items.
Assists nurses with procedures as directed.
Provides guidance and training to assigned student interns.
Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives.

Performs other duties as assigned.
