About The Position

Administratively responsible for all operations and activities within the OR. Supervises Coordinators, Charge Nurses, and staff. Coordinates activities of assigned services according to United Regional policies, objectives, and philosophies. Performs a wide variety of duties, to include accepting responsibility for the direction, control, and planning of activities in the OR. Recognizes emergency, critical, or unusual situations and is able to initiate appropriate intervention in a calm and efficient manner. Demonstrates excellent communication skills, professional judgment, critical thinking, and sound reasoning in daily operations of the OR and decision-making in the OR. Functions as a self-starter who is able to identify departmental needs, initiate appropriate actions, and follow through to completion with minimal direction.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Registered with the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas.
  • ACLS and PALS Certified within 6 months of hire, if not already certified.
  • Previous experience in perioperative nursing with years of experience in OR.
  • Ability to perform under stress and utilize excellent critical thinking skills, reasoning, and problem-solving techniques when necessary.
  • Demonstrates competency in the direct and indirect care of patients in service area(s).
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills in interaction with patients, families, visitors, staff, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to prioritize responsibilities, anticipate operational needs, and take initiative in a fast-paced perioperative environment.
  • Must demonstrate sound reasoning, professional judgment, and the ability to evaluate complex situations and determine appropriate actions.
  • Must have basic computer skills – Epic, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Teams, Etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing strongly preferred.
  • Certification in Perioperative Nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction to personnel who perform a variety of job functions.
  • Works collaboratively to provide age-specific standard of care to the child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.
  • Coordinates assignment of duties and nursing activities with Scheduling Specialty Coordinators, charge nurse, and surgery educator based on competency level of staff. Also, works to coordinate with all other peri-operative departments as needed.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, families, visitors, staff, physicians, and other Allied Health Care providers.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills and sound reasoning to evaluate immediate and long-term problems/issues and takes appropriate corrective action in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates initiative as a self-starter by proactively identifying operational concerns, barriers to workflow, staff needs, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Makes daily rounds in department to assess patient care activities, staff competence, compliance with policies, problems/issues, and physician issues.
  • Ensures reporting and evaluation of all incidents involving unsafe practice, unsafe conditions, errors, accidents, or “near misses.”
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of department and United Regional policies, AORN Recommended Practices and Guidelines, state, federal, and Joint Commission regulations.
  • Assesses department environment and function and initiates measures to ensure compliance with Joint Commission and other standards.
  • Evaluates patient care activities to ensure efficient and quality care delivery.
  • Coordinates unit-specific Process Improvement activities/monitors based upon specific aspects of care.
  • Ensures reporting of activities to Director and PI in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates competence in management of direct patient care for surgical/invasive procedures in all specialties.
  • Monitors staff/OR suites for adherence to Correct Site Surgery Protocol.
  • Deals with individual personnel issues in a professional manner.
  • Provides counseling as necessary and makes referrals when appropriate.
  • Maintains employee records.
  • Records attendance/tardy infractions.
  • Takes necessary action to counsel employees and to reduce absenteeism.
  • Communicates with educational coordinator to ensure adequate orientation for new personnel, as well as planning for educational needs of staff through in-services and competency evaluations.
  • Encourages and provides opportunities for in-services and workshops.
  • Works with personnel in developing and achieving performance goals and suggestions for improvement.
  • Utilizes peer review process and charging personnel audits to assess accuracy of documentation on patient records.
  • Strives for 90% accuracy.
  • Initiates individual educational process and counseling.
  • Participates in cost control and management of unit Operational Budget.
  • Participates in annual Capital and Operational budget preparation.
  • Works with Specialty Coordinators and Surgery Contracts Specialist for data collection and preparation/presentation of information to Director.
  • Coordinates with, and provides support for, Specialty Coordinators to promote continuity of patient care.
  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
