About The Position

The Surgical Services Manager has oversight responsibility at the hospital for the perioperative areas including chart preparation, preoperative services, operating room, procedural areas, postoperative services, central sterilization, respiratory therapy services, scheduling, and the cardiovascular catheterization laboratory. The Surgical Services Manager provides leadership oversight and strategic direction for Surgical Services, with accountability for department-wide performance outcomes including operational performance, quality outcomes, workforce management, financial stewardship, and provider relationships. This role is not responsible for routine daily task execution, but instead ensures effective structure, direction, and alignment across all perioperative and procedural areas through the leadership of the Clinical and Operations Supervisors. The Manager establishes departmental goals, allocates resources, evaluates performance trends, and ensures alignment with organizational strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program required
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program within three (3) years of hire
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Wisconsin
  • BLS certification is required upon hire
  • Must obtain ACLS and PALS certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Must possess a cell phone that interfaces with the organization’s secure messaging system

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight to ensure nursing care delivery models and clinical standards are consistently implemented by Clinical Supervisor(s) and staff
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including those set forth by state and federal agencies, as well as accrediting bodies such as The Joint Commission, maintaining departmental readiness and accountability for survey outcomes
  • Actively participate in and collaborate with organizational leaders during root cause analyses and/or high priority reviews, providing departmental leadership and oversight of corrective action plans
  • Develop process improvements as a result of root cause analyses, high priority reviews, or other quality initiatives, delegating operational implementation to Clinical Supervisor(s) and monitoring measurable outcomes
  • Utilize AORN and other resource materials to establish departmental clinical standards and performance expectations, ensuring operational execution by frontline leadership
  • Collaborate with the Infection Preventionist Registered Nurse on compliance with accreditation requirements, patient safety initiatives, and risk mitigation strategies, ensuring trend monitoring and departmental accountability
  • Manage successful completion of quality audits, analyze trends, and report outcomes to the Chief Nursing Officer and executive leadership
  • Facilitate new product and/or equipment trials, evaluating operational and financial impact prior to approval
  • Prepare annual capital budget requests, including capital expenditure proposals, prioritizing investments based on departmental and organizational strategy
  • Reconcile purchases of equipment and capital against billing, ensuring financial accuracy and accountability
  • Ensure processes are in place for timely repair or replacement of defective equipment
  • Directly manage and develop Clinical Supervisor(s); provide oversight and accountability for department-wide workforce performance through frontline leadership
  • Ensure Supervisors effectively communicate pertinent operational information to frontline staff; provide department-level communication and alignment
  • Lead leadership-level meetings with Supervisors; establish departmental priorities and expectations for operational execution
  • Oversee performance management processes for consistency and compliance; manage performance, ethical behavior, development, and accountability of Clinical Supervisor(s)
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources Department in conducting interviews and making hiring decisions
  • Develop and manage employee engagement and retention efforts, including analysis of annual survey results, development of action plan(s), and monitoring of engagement trends at the department level
  • Evaluate, develop, and implement strategic staffing plans to ensure adequate coverage based on patient needs, budget constraints, and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure departmental competency and education programs are effective and aligned with regulatory and service line requirements
  • Analyze engagement data and hold Supervisors accountable for implementation of engagement initiatives
  • Provide guidance and escalation support for complex operational matters beyond routine supervisory scope
  • Collaborate with the Chief Nursing Officer and Human Resources Department to forecast staffing needs and align staffing levels with organizational goals and objectives
  • Analyze staffing metrics and trends, including but not limited to overtime, productivity, and turnover, and implement department-level solutions to optimize workforce efficiency
  • Provide oversight of departmental onboarding programs and ensure alignment with workforce development goals
  • Foster a collaborative and respectful relationship between nursing leadership and providers, promoting effective communication and service line alignment
  • Coordinate care delivery between nursing and medical staff at a strategic level to ensure operational efficiency and quality outcomes
  • Address complex or escalated conflicts that arise between nursing staff and providers
  • Collaborate with providers on quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety, ensuring measurable outcome improvement
  • Participate in new provider orientation, establishing expectations for operational collaboration and departmental standards
  • Work with executive leadership to develop new service lines that align with the hospital’s strategic goals and address unmet patient needs
  • Implement change management strategies to ensure successful implementation of new growth initiatives and minimize resistance from staff or stakeholders
  • Provide regular performance reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, identifying risks, opportunities, and resource needs
  • Serve on committees as designated by the Chief Nursing Officer, representing departmental leadership perspective
  • Participate in the administrator on-call rotation, managing operational issues within scope and escalating organizational-level concerns appropriately
  • Perform other duties as assigned
